Calling all Andrew Square neighbors 👋🗣️ ASCA is collecting resident feedback through a quick 5–10 minute Neighborhood Needs Survey. We want to make sure resident voices are leading the conversation as the neighborhood continues to change — from day-to-day issues like safety 🚦 and transit 🚇 to bigger topics like housing 🏘️, open space 🌳, and new development 🏗️.

Your responses help ASCA advocate to the City of Boston and clearly share community priorities with groups planning projects in the area. Anonymous unless you choose to share contact info at the end ✅

🔥 LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: SUSHI GUYS 🔥

We spent this past Sunday at Sushi Guys — a cozy, unassuming sushi spot at 283 Old Colony Ave, right in Andrew Square — and we left seriously impressed 🍣

About Sushi Guys & the teamSushi Guys was opened in September 2024 by Jaimie Thang (owner/manager) and Cary Wong (chef/partner). Alongside them is Lyn Thang, a dedicated team member who helps make every guest feel welcome. Jaimie and Lyn are Southie locals, both graduating from South Boston High School. They wanted to bring high-quality, chef-driven sushi to their community while staying deeply connected to it.

Cary, with 30 years of sushi experience, has even been voted “Best Sushi” by a Reader’s Choice Award — a reflection of his skill and commitment to fresh, flavorful sushi.

Why we love itSushi Guys stands out for its unique flavor profiles, chef-crafted sauces, and thoughtfully paired toppings that elevate each dish. We highly recommend trying:
✨ Kiss the Fire Maki
✨ Salmon Crudo
✨ Spicy Crab Salad

The freshness and quality of the sushi impressed us at every bite. Combined with a warm, welcoming environment and staff who go above and beyond, Sushi Guys has quickly become one of the best casual sushi restaurants in Boston — worth traveling across the city to experience.

Whether for a date night, a casual outing with friends, or takeout, Sushi Guys delivers fresh, approachable, expertly crafted sushi in a space that feels like part of the neighborhood.

Check them out at 283 Old Colony Ave or online at sushiguysboston.com.

Stay tuned - our next Business of the Square spotlight drops next week!

This Halloween, ASCA got into the spirit of things — by planting a new tree right in the heart of Andrew Square! 🌳🎃

Earlier this week, Todd Mistor, Director of Urban Forestry at the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and his team added new trees along Preble Street and around the Square. Today, ASCA members Scott Westerman and Gerry Craig joined in for one last planting under Todd’s guidance — right in the center of the Square.

President Linda Zablocki was on-site keeping a close eye on the crew to make sure no one ghosted on their duties! 👻

A greener Square and another project complete — we’re grateful for the partnership and hard work of Todd and his team. 💚

Happy Labor Day from Andrew Square Civic Association! 🎉🇺🇸

Today we celebrate the hard work, dedication, and spirit of America’s workers—the backbone of our neighborhoods and our nation. 💪

And speaking of hard work… around Andrew Square, we know plenty of folks are “laboring” in a different way today—move-in day! 📦🚛 To all the students, families, and new neighbors hauling boxes and furniture, welcome to the community (and remember: lift with your knees 😉)!

🪖 Operation Rat Trap: Mission in Progress 🐀

ASCA leadership convened with our allies for a strategic briefing on the front lines of the rat war — and the message is clear: Southie will not surrender to rodents!

We thank our neighborhood command crew for stepping up and showing up:
👨‍✈️ Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn and Chief of Staff Charlie Levin
🏛️ Mayor’s Office: Lydia Polaski, Luke Hines
🚨 Environmental Services: Assistant Commissioner John Ulrich
🏗️ ISD: Mike Mackan, Hung Nguyen, Catherine Wilson
🏘️ Boston Housing Authority: Administrator Kenzie Bok, Maintenance Manager Tim Collins
🏢 Mary Ellen McCormack Housing: Shawanda Patterson, Teddy Toland
🔧 Abacus Builders: Mark Little & team
🧢 And of course, ASCA leadership: Linda, Pattie, Gerry & Maria

A special salute to the boots-on-the-ground staff from every agency and organization — your frontline efforts in Andrew Square are what keeps this war effort moving!

Want to enlist in the fight? Here’s how you can help:
🧭 Call or use the 311 app to report rat sightings
🛡️ Secure your trash bins — tight lids, no overflows
💩 Scoop that dog p**p — it's caviar to rodents
🏡 Keep yards clean — no hiding spots, no infestations

Together, we hold the line. Stay vigilant. Stay clean. Stay rat-free!

07/17/2025

We love our neighbors… just not the ones with tails and tiny hands 🐀

Southie’s got enough character without rats running the block. Here's how you can join the war on rodents:

🔹 Report sightings via the 311 app or by calling 311
🔹 Keep trash bins sealed and never let them overflow
🔹 Scoop that p**p — dog droppings are basically rat charcuterie 😖 🤮

Let’s keep our streets clean, our bins shut, and the rats out!

A vibrant flower mural has sprung up in Andrew Square, elegantly draping the side of a commercial building at the corner of Preble and Vinton streets. Called Nations in Bloom, this public art project, funded in part by the South Boston Community Development Foundation (SBCDF), is designed to bring joy to the Andrew Square neighborhood. The flowers depicted in the mural represent the various nationalities of those who live in Andrew Square and call the neighborhood home

Café Polonia has been Andrew Square Civic Association’s nominee for Boston’s Legacy Award three years running, and for good reason. The Zagat-rated and Trip Advisor-recommended restaurant serves delicious traditional Polish cuisine in a homey, cheery atmosphere that has become a mainstay in Boston’s Polish Triangle. Four years ago, the Biedrzycki brothers defied the odds of Covid-19, taking over Café Polonia during a pandemic, with a passion for keeping authentic Polish fare alive in Boston. They have done that – and so much more.
