For centuries, African women have been the backbone of brewing, passing down traditions that shaped beer culture as we know it. Among Bantu-speaking tribes, women brewed sorghum beer for markets, weddings, and ceremonies—an art carried through generations. Their expertise and innovation created unique, regionally inspired brews that remain a vital part of African culture today.

Yet, despite this deep history, women in brewing have often been overlooked. This Women’s History Month, we honor the Black women—past and present—who have shaped the beer industry with their skill, creativity, and resilience. 🍻

Did you know Peter Hemings was the first Black person in the U.S. to be professionally trained in brewing? Born into slavery at Monticello, he was Elizabeth Hemings' son and Sally Hemings' brother, known for her relationship with Thomas Jefferson.

Originally trained as a chef, Peter mastered brewing under Joseph Miller, an English-trained brewer. By 1813, he was running Monticello's malting and brewing operations, producing ale so well-regarded that guests requested the recipe to recreate it at home. Jefferson himself praised Hemings for his skill, intelligence, and diligence.

Though often overlooked, Peter Hemings' contributions helped shape early American brewing. His story is a reminder that Black excellence has always been part of this industry. 🍻

Long before craft beer became a movement, African communities were perfecting the art of brewing. Sorghum beer, also called ""opaque beer"" for its cloudy appearance, has been a staple across the continent for centuries.

Bantu-speaking tribes carried the tradition of sorghum beer as they migrated south, passing down brewing knowledge through generations. Each region adds its own twist, using local grains like maize, millet, and cassava to create unique flavors.

Today, rural and commercial breweries continue this rich legacy, keeping African beer culture alive. Next time you raise a glass, remember the deep roots of brewing. 🍻 What’s the most unique beer you’ve ever tried?

What are Hops? 🍺

Hops are the hanging flowers of the Humulus lupulus plant 🌿, a key ingredient in beer. They add that signature bitterness, aroma, and flavor that balances out the sweetness of malt. Beyond taste, hops also help preserve beer, keeping it fresh longer. Different hop varieties bring out flavors like citrus, pine, tropical fruit, or floral notes – making each brew unique! 🍻

Next time you sip on a craft beer, take a moment to appreciate the hops working behind the scenes. What's your favorite hop-forward beer? 👀

2024 was a year of action, community, and craft beer! 🍻✨ At the top of the year, we introduced Black Brew Dialogues with a mission to create more diversity and inclusion in the craft beer space—and we stayed true to our word.

From Brewing Up Diversity to Digging In The Crates, Hella Black Trivia, and Roxbury Russetfest, we connected, educated, and celebrated with you all. None of this would have been possible without our incredible collaborators—Rooted in Roxbury, Shirley-Eustis House, Longlive Roxbury, Jeff Gray, DJ TROY Frost—and every single person who attended, shared a post, or simply showed love. 🙏🏾

Thank you for being part of the journey. We can't wait to bring you even more in 2025. Happy New Year! 🎉

Raise a glass to Theodore Mack 🍺✨, the trailblazing owner of Peoples Brewing Company—the first Black-owned brewery in the United States!

Born and raised in Alabama as the grandson of an enslaved woman, Mack pursued his dream in the late 1960s, establishing Peoples Brewing Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

He believed brewing and selling beer would be just another peak to conquer—no harder than organizing buses to the March on Washington or picketing segregated schools in Milwaukee. His journey was one of resilience, navigating the subtle bigotry of Middle America, corruption in the beer industry, and the failures of federal support.

Mack’s story is a testament to Black entrepreneurship, innovation, and pride during a pivotal time in the racial justice movement. At Black Brew Dialogues, we honor his legacy by fostering diversity and inclusion in the craft beer space for Black, BIPOC, and marginalized groups.

Cheers to progress, resilience, and representation in every pour! 🖤💛
