CDMA Black Caucus

CDMA Black Caucus The official Black Caucus of the College Dems of MA, working to foster dialogue among college students, the public and elected officials.

The caucus system of the College Democrats of Massachusetts provides college students the unique opportunity to become involved with groups and issues that really matter to them and progressive politics. As the Democratic Party is composed of many coalitions and concerns, the caucus program allows chapters to engage like-minded student organizations and individuals on their respective campuses. Ca

ucuses support legislation and candidates that embody their values and interests. Further, it will enables the College Democrats of Massachusetts to build relationships with organizations and institutions across the Commonwealth, providing our membership with opportunities to take direct action, attend events, network, and receive internships.

Name: Morgan Spellman
School: Williams College

"After spending my underclassmen years at Boston University, I will be attending Williams College in the fall as a junior transfer. I am pursuing a B.A. in Political Science. I am interested in all facets of human rights, the political sphere, and the criminal justice system on both the local and international scales. During my time at Boston University, I became heavily involved with BU College Democrats as the Secretary. I look forward to continuing my work with Massachusetts College Democrats as a member of the Black Caucus, and I hope to bring my work with me to Williams, as well as get involved with other political organizations, the Black Student Union, and mock trial. In the future, hope to become a Criminal Prosecutor, while also contributing to my community by combining my knowledge of social work and law, as well as my love of children, through legal advocacy for underprivileged youth in low-income neighborhoods in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area."

Name: Alexis Toliver
School: Harvard University

"I'm from California. I graduated from The Johns Hopkins University in 2015 with an M.S in Neuroscience and double minor in music and bioethics. I am currently completing a post baccalaureate fellowship in Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. My pronouns are She/Her/Hers. I am a disabled activist. Outside of the black caucus, I'm a member of the Black Disability Studies Committee for the National Black Disability Coalition and an ESL tutor for Harvard Bridge. My work, both in non-profit and in activism, began in Baltimore while fighting against homelessness and police brutality. My influence to speak up for others came from my Great-Grandmother. She showed me the true strength of a black woman and I honestly feel like I would be letting her down if I didn't continue to fight for communities in need. She's also the reason that I've called myself a democrat since the age of 6. When I spend time with her, we watch the news and have open discussions on current events of the world.
I'm obviously pro-black, but I've also done actions for Palestinian solidarity, Immigrant support/solidarity, LBQTQIA solidarity, and Afro-Latinx solidarity. One of my goals for the Black Caucus is to hold workshops discussing black mental health and disabilities. I would also like to host a community event, like breakfast, for children in areas like Dorchester and Lynn."
