Public safety is a fundamental promise we owe to everyone who lives, works, and visits Boston.

Every day, unarmed security guards serve as an essential pillar of community safety across our city. Yet, Massachusetts currently has no mandatory baseline training standards for these frontline workers.

I am proud to partner with Councilor Ruthzee Louijeune and 32BJ SEIU to file legislation that changes that. By requiring employers to fund city-certified, accredited training in de-escalation, CPR, mental health awareness, and emergency response, we are moving Boston from reactive crisis management to proactive preparation.

Team Santana had a fantastic time celebrating National Night Out across the city this week. From Monday’s rain to Tuesday’s sunshine, every neighborhood brought meaningful discussions about keeping Boston safe and connected.

Congratulations to all the community members recognized for their dedication, and a heartfelt thank you to our Boston Police Department officers and public safety personnel who serve our city every day. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, share ideas, and celebrate with us. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you to build safer, stronger neighborhoods together!

Our team was honored to join neighbors and community partners at the BCYF Tobin Community Center to celebrate a true Mission Hill legend, John Jackson!

John is so deeply cherished that one party simply wasn’t enough. We had a wonderful time celebrating his legacy at his farewell ice cream social—just one of several well-deserved send-offs held in his honor. While his presence will be sorely missed around Mission Hill, we join all of Boston in sending him off with immense gratitude as he sails into a very well-deserved retirement.

To top off the celebrations, we were thrilled to be present for the official unveiling of the John Jackson Music & Technology Center. Renaming this vital media lab in John’s honor is a fitting tribute to a stalwart leader who has poured so much heart, energy, and dedication into the Tobin Community Center.

Santana’s Youth Force officially hit the pavement in East Boston for this summer’s first neighborhood cleanup! Our youth rolled up their sleeves, grabbed trash bags, and spruced up LoPresti Park.

A massive shoutout to our phenomenal partners at Eastie Clean and Green for collaborating with us. Building cleaner, greener, and more vibrant neighborhoods takes a village, and working alongside dedicated community leaders made all the difference.

Seeing our youth take authentic ownership of their streets is what civic engagement is all about.

Take us back to the Tall Ships! Earlier this month, our team was honored to join the Dominican Consulate aboard the Juan Bautista Cambiaso. Docked right in Boston Harbor, the flagship vessel brought a powerful celebration of heritage, history, and vibrant culture to our city’s waterfront.

It was a memorable evening taking in the sea air, connecting with community leaders, and celebrating the deep pride and rich traditions of Boston’s Dominican community.

Earlier this month, Councilor Santana sat down with this year’s Boston City Council summer interns for an engaging workshop on “Unlocking Opportunities: The Power of Networking.”

The conversation went beyond traditional advice to focus on the heart of professional growth: building genuine relationships, crafting a strong personal pitch, and navigating new spaces with confidence. Councilor Santana also shared personal stories from his own path in public service, emphasizing how authentic connections and mentorship have helped guide his journey.
Investing in our interns means investing in the future of Boston. It was inspiring to connect with such a sharp, dedicated group of rising leaders, and we are excited to see where their paths take them next.

After several months of dealing with persistent health challenges, I am grateful to share some encouraging news. On Sunday, after an 11-day stay at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I was discharged and am now continuing my recovery at home.

While I still have a few follow-up appointments and outpatient testing ahead, I am feeling stronger each day and remain on track to return to the Boston City Council for our regular meeting on August 5. I am optimistic about my recovery and look forward to getting back to doing what I love most—serving the people of Boston.

These past few weeks have reminded me just how precious our health is and how fortunate we are to have extraordinary healthcare professionals in our city. I am incredibly grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for the outstanding care, compassion, and encouragement they provided throughout my stay.

I also want to thank everyone who reached out with prayers, kind words, messages, and support. To my family, friends, colleagues, and the countless Boston residents who checked in on me—you lifted my spirits during a challenging time and reminded me why I am so proud to call this city home. Your kindness meant more than I can adequately express.

Although my recovery will continue over the coming weeks, I feel energized, optimistic, and excited to return to the work our communities have entrusted me to do.

Santana’s Youth Force has been hard at work serving the neighborhood alongside the East Boston Community Soup Kitchen.

We started the morning by unloading delivery trucks, sorting ingredients, and helping out with food prep. By dividing up tasks and working as a team, everyone kept operations organized and moving quickly. Together, we packed over 500 grocery bags filled with fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, and essentials to distribute to local families.

It was a deeply rewarding morning spent working side-by-side to help ensure our East Boston neighbors have reliable access to the fresh, nutritious food they deserve.

Honored to celebrate this year’s Edwin Polanco Scholarship recipients!

A few years ago, Edwin learned that a student almost missed out on attending college because they were short just $400. Knowing how easily a small gap can derail a big dream, he stepped up to create a program that gives graduating high school seniors $500 to help cover those initial college expenses.

At this year’s ceremony, eight inspiring students received scholarships to launch the next chapter of their educational journeys. Watching these young leaders receive the support they deserve was a powerful reminder of how much impact one thoughtful community member can make.

Thank you to everyone who ensures this scholarship continues to grow, with special recognition to Milagros Martes for her dedication to bringing this celebration together. Huge congratulations to all eight scholars as they take this next big step!

From the small businesses powering East Boston to the cultural and community spaces across Jamaica Plain, Boston’s Colombian community fuels so much of our city’s daily heart and hustle. Last week’s flag raising was a joyful celebration of heritage, complete with incredible music, warm energy, and a crowd that briefly turned the plaza bricks into a dance floor.
Our team was proud to stand alongside local organizers, families, and neighborhood leaders to honor the history, resilience, and ongoing impact of Colombian Bostonians.
