The Boston Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors with clean, green, safe, and accessible open space in more than 2,200 acres of park land throughout the city including parks, playgrounds, athletic facilities, city squares, urban wilds, street trees, three active cemeteries, 16 historic burying grounds, and two golf courses. In addition to maintaining the historic integrit

y of such famous landmarks as Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the other parks comprising Frederick Law Olmsted's Emerald Necklace, the Department services and upgrades facilities ranging from tot lots to the 527-acre Franklin Park. The Department also programs a wide range of community events and live entertainment in the parks under its jurisdiction. The Boston Park Rangers act as the Department's eyes and ears while enhancing public safety. Appointed by the Mayor, the Boston Parks and Recreation Commission serves as the policy-making citizen body that over\sees the operation of the Department and considers matters of public concern.

🌧️Unfortunately due to heavy rainfall, our ball fields are not playable today Tuesday, June 23, 2026. Parks crews will be working around the clock tomorrow to restore fields.

We’d like to remind you that flooded ball fields and clay infields need time and care to recover. Please do not attempt to dig trenches, broom, rake or restore fields yourself. Patience now ensures safe and functional playing fields for all. 🥎

Boston has recently been ranked at the top city in the U.S. for playability! 🛝

In Boston, we're working every day to make our city the most family-friendly in the country and we're proud to be recognized by ProCare Therapy's U.S. Playability Index for our exceptional parks and playgrounds.

Boston earned high marks for playgrounds, park access, and amenities like splash pads. With 100% of residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park or open space, we're committed to ensuring everyone has access to places to play and connect.
