Commonwealth Corporation

Commonwealth Corporation Building skills for a strong economy. In Massachusetts there is a mismatch between the skills that people have and the skills that businesses need.

We address this mismatch by investing in training and education that help people get better jobs. It could be people who are already working who need additional skills, people who are unemployed, or youth looking to enter in the workforce. In the last 5 years, we’ve worked with more than 30,000 youth and adults.

Congratulations to these 7 newly trained Certified Nursing Assistants! 🎉

These graduates completed their training with support from our Healthcare HUBs grant program and through a collaboration with MassHire Berkshire Career Center, Berkshire Health Systems, Berkshire Community College, and the MassHire Berkshire Workforce Board.

Healthcare and social assistance remain among the largest and most vital job sectors in Berkshire County. We’re proud to support the development of hands-on training programs that meet the growing demand for skilled nursing assistants.

Preparing young people for the workforce takes more than classroom learning. It takes real opportunities, trusted support systems, and experiences that help build confidence for the future.

Commonwealth Corporation President & CEO Molly Jacobson and YouthWorks Senior Regional Support Manager Carlos Fuentes recently visited the Lawrence High School Transition Program, alongside the MassHire Merrimack Valley Workforce Board, to hear directly from students about their career interests, workforce goals, and the skills they are developing through hands-on work experiences.

The program supports youth with disabilities as they transition into adulthood, employment, and greater independence. Through placements with organizations including Lawrence General Hospital and House of Mercy, students are gaining valuable real-world experience while building workplace readiness skills and exploring future career pathways.

Programs like YouthWorks continue to help strengthen local workforce systems by connecting young people to meaningful opportunities that support long-term success both professionally and personally.

Thank you to MassHire Merrimack Valley Workforce Board and the Lawrence Transition team for coordinating a meaningful visit and for the continued partnership in supporting youth across the region.

Workforce development investments are helping expand access to healthcare training opportunities across the Berkshires while strengthening the region’s talent pipeline for in-demand healthcare careers.

Congratulations to Rebecca, Brittney, Alyson, and Theresa for starting the LPN program at McCann Technical School

This work is supported through a $2.3 million investment awarded to the Berkshire County Regional Employment Board, Inc. through the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund (Donnelly Grant), administered by Commonwealth Corporation on behalf of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The initiative supports hands-on training, career support, employer partnerships, and job placement efforts for unemployed and underemployed individuals pursuing careers, including LPN, CNA, Medical Assistant, Acute Care Nurse Assistant, and Registered Behavioral Technician roles.
