As Cross Program Manager for Youth & Justice, Kayla Johnson works with grantees and colleagues to strengthen programs for young people, young adults with disabilities, and justice-involved individuals across Massachusetts. Supporting neighbors at PACE Community Food Center in New Bedford is granting YouthWorks participants the opportunity to build valuable skills while making a difference in their community. PACE provides nutritious food and other essential items at no cost to community members. YouthWorks participants gain essential employment skills as they greet clients, enter data, keep the pantry stocked, and help visitors find what they need.

During a recent visit, Secretary Lauren Jones, State Representative Steven Ouellette, Alves Medeiros from State Representative Antonion Cabral’s Office, MassHire partners, and CommCorp staff heard directly from participants about what they are learning and how they hope to use those skills in their future careers. One participant shared that their experience at PACE helped her discover a talent and passion for human services. With plans to return to a post-secondary program, the hands-on experience she is gaining is helping her feel ready for the next step.

The visit highlighted how YouthWorks gives young people opportunities to explore career paths, gain hands-on experience, and build valuable skills, while also strengthening worksites and supporting local communities.

Last week, CommCorp joined Massachusetts Labor & Workforce Development Secretary Lauren Jones, Representative Norman J. Orrall, and Senator Kelly A. Dooner at Fernandes Farm in Berkley to see YouthWorks in action and hear firsthand from young people continuing to build their skills through meaningful work experiences.

We had the opportunity to spend time with Eli, a YouthWorks participant whose experience at Fernandes Farms began earlier this year and is continuing this summer through YouthWorks. For Eli, the summer has been an extension of his learning and career exploration. He has continued developing his knowledge of the intricacies of planting, growing and caring for crops and flowers while gaining hands-on experience in a working farm environment.

His experience also gives him exposure to the many different skills that keep a local business running. From agriculture and horticulture to retail operations and customer service, Eli is continuing to learn, take on responsibility and explore where his interests and strengths may lead him in the future.

During the visit, Secretary Jones had the opportunity to hear about Eli’s experience and join in a hands-on harvesting activity.

That continued learning is an important part of what YouthWorks makes possible. Through paid work experiences, young people across Massachusetts can deepen their skills, explore career pathways, build professional relationships and gain experience that helps prepare them for what comes next.

We were also glad to meet Aaron Fernandes and Aimee Fernandes, fourth-generation members of the family that owns and operates Fernandes Farms, and see the supportive environment they are providing for young people to learn on the job.

Thank you to Eli for sharing his experience, to the Fernandes family for opening their workplace to young people, and to MassHire Bristol Workforce Board and Taunton Area School to Career Partnership for helping create opportunities for young people to keep learning, growing and exploring their futures through YouthWorks.

Great businesses start with great people.

The Commonwealth Corporation team recently visited Shepley Wood Products in Hyannis to see how they’re investing in their employees and strengthening their workforce using funding from the Workforce Training Fund Program.

We were joined by Massachusetts Labor & Workforce Development Secretary Lauren Jones and State Representative Steven Xiarhos for a tour of the facility, where we met Shepley team members who shared how training has helped them build new skills, take on new responsibilities, and grow their careers.

Through the Workforce Training Fund Program, Shepley employees have participated in trainings on customer service, leadership development, AI and productivity, workplace ESOL, process improvement, and more.

And, of course, no visit to a lumber operation would be complete without a live wood cutting demonstration!

Businesses like Shepley are an essential part of Massachusetts’ economy, and we’re proud to partner with employers who are committed to investing in their people and building a stronger future. Thank you to the entire Shepley team for hosting us and sharing your work!

What happens when cutting-edge technology meets hands-on career training?

The Commonwealth Corporation team recently visited our grantee, Blackstone Valley Hub for Workforce Development, to see the impactful work happening through the Employment Program for Young Adults with Disabilities.

We had the chance to meet participants and witness their patient care training in action. BVEdHub brings learning to life with an interactive digital anatomy table that lets participants explore the human body in 3D, along with virtual reality equipment that helps them practice key skills, like interviewing.

The program breaks down barriers to employment by building key employability skills, providing hands-on job training, and connecting young adults with disabilities to meaningful job opportunities.

We were also glad to be joined by Amanda Galonek Hellyar from Senator Fattman’s office for the visit! It was inspiring to see technology, training, and opportunity come together to help young adults build pathways to careers.
