Abolitionist Mail Project (AMP) connects people incarcerated in Massachusetts and non-incarcerated people because we believe those relationships will help to end incarceration.

Due to q***rphobia, q***r people are overrepresented in every stage of the criminal legal process. So it makes unfortunate sense that 58% of our members identify as something other than straight, and a shocking 14% are trans women.

Incarcerated q***rs like our members have something important to offer this moment. They have the experience of being persecuted and on the edges that many of the most privileged are feeling for the first time. They give us hope that we can fight even in places where it seems unimaginable.

Whether you are interested in writing one of the many elders looking for a friend, seeking someone of similar demographics, or looking generally to meet someone new, our LGBTQIA2S+ pen-pals represent many genders, sexualities, races, ages, abilities, and more.

Mike is an easy-going guy with a positive attitude trying to make the best of his situation. He can talk forever about science and nature. To get the conversation started, he wants to know "What are your thoughts on extraterrestrial life? Are we the only ones?"

If you're part of our reading group, tell your inside reader to watch for mail next week!

Many prisons seem to be throwing out our mail without giving incarcerated people a contraband notice— because there's nothing wrong with what we're sending. They just want to interrupt friendship and caring human connections. We'll continue sending both readings and love over the walls.

Poet and inside pen-pal Maze performs a poem at Wake Up The Earth. We're looking for more inside pen-pals (especial q***r and trans pen-pals) to call into an event 06/05. They can share poetry or writing, lead a lecture, offer discussion starters, or anything else they can think of! Talk to your pen-pal and reach out for more info!

Communicating via snail mail is not cheap, but letters are a lifeline for many incarcerated people and those who care about them. Paper mail remains under threat in Massachusetts, but people tell us even photocopies of thoughtfully written cards can help illuminate a potentially difficult birthday. AMP is not a nonprofit or charity. We are comrades engaged in a political project doing our small part to weaken the isolation imposed by prison walls. We pull together pocket change from real people to make a real difference as we work toward the world we want.

People inside who join pen-pal programs like ours are often dealing with deep loneliness and isolation. Many of our members do not have anyone in the outside world, and few inside. Our most isolated members don't get to have heart-to-hearts. They can't let down their guard. They never get a hug. They tell us every letter, email, or phone call is a few minutes they are socially connected and mentally free. By sharing what's going on in your life, you can help a person feel remembered.

In return, you'll get a genuine friend, someone with advice, compassion, and essential insights to the prison system. If you're one of the many outside members are also isolated and can understand needing a friend, we want to help you find one.

We believe these reciprocal pen-pal friendships help break down prison walls and are an essential part of abolition. We tell outside writers if they aren't abolitionists yet, they will be when they form a friendship.
