We were excited to see Tina Zhu Xi Caruso, a previous MassAbility and upcoming panelist at this year's Explore Possibility Summit celebrated along with other individuals like Helen Chin Schlichte, Senator Vanna Howard, Fred Dow, Nick Chau, Paul Lee, and Suzanne Lee at the Embrace Boston inaugural Harry Hom Dow Awards. Each honoree has a rich history of community work and advocacy, and we encourage you to learn more about them at embraceboston.org/embrace-honors-harry-hom-dow

There are dragon dancers, drummers, leaders speaking into microphones, and large banners and standees featuring portraits of the honorees. It's AANHPI Heritage Month! Check out events happening around the state before the month ends 👇

Why is May AANHPI Heritage Month? Well, Congress chose this month to commemorate when people from Japan immigrated to the US back in May of 1843, but it wasn't until 1992 that AAPI Heritage Week became recognized as AAPI Heritage Month. Later, it grew to include native people from Hawaii, too.

Join us tomorrow night at the Harry Hom Dow Awards at the Embrace Boston Statue, honoring activists, advocates, and leaders who are making a difference in Boston today like Tina Zhu Xi Caruso. We’re thrilled to celebrate Tina’s advocacy and work in the community and look forward to welcoming her as a panelist for our upcoming Explore Possibility event in June!

This weekend is also the second annual AAPI Heritage Concert by Boston Festival Orchestra on Saturday afternoon. Next Sunday, enjoy a traditional Japanese concert experience by Mountain River Taiko with Taiko and Koto music and an Odori dance show.

Sonia felt the loss of her independence while staying in a nursing home after undergoing major surgery and treatment for bone cancer. That's where MassAbility's Waiver Program stepped in to help Sonia get back to her life, regain independence, and move into her own apartment.

We're grateful to have spent a day with Sonia learning about her story and following along to her volunteer work as a Peer Mentor, where she supports other people just starting out in the Waiver program and as they move back into their communities. Watch the full video at https://youtu.be/58OqC6sslUA

You can also learn more about the program at www.mass.gov/info-details/moving-forward-program

Video Description: A compilation of video clips around Sonia's home, some of her talking, and others of her chatting with people in a nursing home, or walking around with her walker outside in her community. It's filmed in documentary-style with gentle music playing in the background that grounds the setting in her home and shows her personality and centers her lived experience.

This month's Hiring Events in Boston and Sturbridge were a great success! We are so thankful to all of our job seekers, employer partners, and staff for coming together for such an important event.

This wasn't a typical hiring fair, and our staff worked hard to secure real interviews for open positions that might be a great fit for a job seeker they support. With our Business Relations Team handling the internal coordination between employers and pre-screening roles to match to the right people, this allowed our job seekers to focus on the important part: interviewing. And we are happy to share that as of today, eight individuals have been extended job offers!

Looking forward to our next hiring events in June at Bridgewater and Lowell!

On Saturday, we honored the life of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, an avid fisherman and community member in Massachusetts. Eric was a driven young man, on track to graduate from the Isenberg School of Management at Umass Amherst and become a local business owner. He was also a MassAbility participant with a strong love for fishing and a passion for wildlife conservation in Western Mass.

We are grateful for the close collaboration with Governor Maura Healey's Office, the Department of Fish and Game, MassWildlife, and the Department of Conservation and Recreation to help us host an adaptive fishing festival to encourage individuals of all ages and abilities to learn how to fish and enjoy the outdoors.

Video Description: A compilation of clips from a rainy-day fishing event and memorial commemorating Eric. It looks lively and many people from the community came out to learn how to fish with easy-to-use equipment with the help of volunteers from around the area and members of the Pioneer Valley Boat and Surf Club to teach the younger generation how to get outside and enjoy fishing.

On Wednesday, we hosted our first of four hiring events for MassAbility jobseekers to great success! With over 60 interviews, participants and employers felt empowered to showcase their skills and potential with our employer partners. This would not have been possible without the close collaboration of many teams across MassAbility and our event planning partners. We are especially thankful for our employer partners for working with us, we are excited to continue helping you fill your open roles with our talented job seekers.

Video Description: A collage style video showing people getting ready for interviews, arriving, chatting with businesses, and general event set up, and clips of people interviewing for different jobs. The event looked lively and everyone very professionally dressed, and Dress for Success helped provide outfits and styling support.
