Big things are happening in Long Beach!

This past Saturday, April 25th, we headed to the Jenny Oropeza Community Center for Workshop 2 of the Drake-Chavez Master Plan and Connection projects. It was an incredible morning spent sharing our latest progress and, most importantly, hearing directly from you. Our team shared early design concepts that were built directly from previous feedback before moving into small groups across three interactive stations to dive deep into project-specific details.

We are grateful for the dedicated neighbors who showed up to share their ideas. Your voices are shaping the future of these spaces, and we’re excited to keep building this vision together!

In a recent talk, Chris Reed shared work identifying climate risks facing the Sarasota, Florida’s Downtown Bayfront, exploring how rising seas, storms, flooding, and increasing heat are impacting this area and the rgion’s iconic legacy of mid-century houses that embrace landscape and the environment.

The presentation highlighted research developed through the Climate Case seminar at Harvard GSD featuring work by students across the Master in Landscape Architecture, Master of Architecture, Master in Design Studies, and Master in Urban Design programs, who are documenting vulnerabilities and helping frame strategies for protecting these important buildings and landscapes.

Now live on our website: Binney Park!

Located in the rapidly growing Kendall Square neighborhood in Cambridge, Binney Park is one of three new public open spaces designed by Stoss to expand the local network of parks and connections for residents, workers, and visitors—and dogs!

Situated at a key crossroads, the park supports critical pedestrian and bicycle connections while offering spaces for everyday gathering and recreation. A playful fenced dog area, intimate seating zones, and custom wood terraces create places for both people and pets to connect, relax, and spend time outdoors.

Beneath the surface, the design integrates stormwater infrastructure that exceeds regulatory standards, including porous paving, rain gardens, and underground detention systems that slow and clean runoff.

Now live on our website: Sondheim Amphitheater at Ruth J. Simmons Quad.

Located at key crossroads on Brown University’s campus, this project reimagines a historic quad as a more accessible, flexible, and vibrant gathering space. Amphitheater seating, accessible campus connections, and infrastructure for performances support a wide range of activities, from outdoor classrooms and concerts to casual study and everyday campus life.

The design integrates regionally sourced pink granite, climate-adapted plantings, and improved stormwater management- enhancing the quad’s character while supporting long-term resilience.

We’re excited to share that Daewoo Haengdang Summit (La Cerveau Summit) in Seoul has been recognized with multiple international design honors, including the Seoul Good Light Awards Grand Prize and the 2025 Good Design Awards across four categories.

Set at the confluence of tributary streams to the Han River and surrounded by native forest and riparian habitats, the landscape design, titled “Confluence at Haengdang-Dong” draws inspiration from the meeting of water, forest, and community. A network of “streams” and programmed nodes connects adjacent green spaces and neighborhoods, creating accessible, playful, and social destinations throughout the site.
Developed with Daewoo E&C, the project integrates architecture, landscape, and lighting through the brand philosophy of “Modern Koreaness”. Subtle, indirect illumination guides movement, heightens spatial experience, and shapes a calm, dignified nighttime environment. Smart, time based lighting controls balance visual comfort, safety, and reduced light pollution, supporting a more resilient urban nightscape.

Honored to see this work recognized for its environmental sensitivity, community centered design, and design excellence.

The Holcim Foundation is hosting the 2025 Holcim Awards Ceremony in Venice, celebrating 20 projects advancing sustainable construction worldwide, including Resilient Moakley Park in South Boston.
Moakley is recognized for transforming a 60 acre waterfront park into climate infrastructure, restoring marshes, managing stormwater, and layering in adaptive landscapes and community driven recreation spaces along Boston’s waterfront.

We’re thrilled to share that Moakley Park has been selected as one of 20 global winners of the 2025 Holcim Foundation Awards.

The project is recognized for its innovative, community driven approach to climate adaptation and urban resilience, transforming one of Boston’s largest waterfront open spaces into a 21st century park that protects nearby neighborhoods from sea level rise and flooding while enhancing community and recreational uses, biodiversity, canopy cover, and social equity.
Moakley Park exemplifies a multidimensional model for Healthy Planet, Thriving Communities, and Uplifting Places, integrating passive and nature based design, inclusive community engagement, and sustainable operations to ensure long term resilience and belonging.

We’re honored to celebrate alongside the other global awardees and look forward to the Holcim Awards Ceremony in Venice next month.

SHIFT: The GSD at the 6th Chicago Architecture Biennial

Chris Reed, Founding Director of STOSS Landscape Urbanism and Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard GSD, joins GSD faculty and alumni to present installations featured in the 6th Chicago Architecture Biennial.

His presentation, Living Histories: Space for Reckoning, explores how public space can serve as a site for remembrance, reflection, and civic dialogue—transforming how we commemorate complex histories and collective memory.
