Sampling efforts in New Hampshire 🧪

💧In support of the , EPA employees from the New England Regional Laboratory were in to collect samples at stormwater outfalls to check for things like bacteria, surfactants and residual chlorine.

➡️ Once collected, these samples are returned to our to analyze for E. coli, enterococcus, and source tracking compounds.

💭 ? This data helps us detect the presence of unlawful discharge into water bodies and supports our towns and cities in meeting their stormwater compliance obligations.

🏗️ From learning to developing, it’s a success in progress!

➡️ Recently, EPA Brownfields staff met with City of Lawrence, Massachusetts and their Qualified Environmental Professionals to go over the outcomes of two recent community meetings.

⛽ The purpose of these community meetings was to review the proposed reuse of the site into green space for recreational use. Formerly known as Cyr Oil, the location was a gas station until 1993, with the city taking over the site in 2006.

🤝 Through a collaborative effort between the city’s Multipurpose funding, the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission, Groundwork Lawrence, and the community have come together to shape the future of the decommissioned gas station.

💭 ? Multipurpose Grants provide funding to carry out a range of eligible assessment and cleanup activities with a proposed area.

‘Seas’ the day, but safely! 🌊

☀️ It’s starting to feel like a summer, which means it’s important to know when it’s safe to swim.

➡️ : EPA recently announced a total of $9.75 million in grant funding that coastal and Great Lakes states, Tribes and territories will use to monitor water quality at beaches and to notify the public if elevated levels of bacteria make swimming unsafe. Grants are awarded to eligible states, territories and Tribes to develop and implement programs to monitor their beaches and notify the public when it is not safe to swim.

This summer, it’s all about staying in your home! ☀️

🏡 ? Home improvement projects that take place in a pre-1978 home may create lead dust, which can be dangerous to you and your family.

➡️ EPA New England's lead paint initiative aims to reduce childhood lead exposure through increased awareness and improved compliance with federal lead paint requirements, like the Renovation, Repair and Painting and Lead Disclosure rules.

🤝 Join EPA New England in celebrating our buzzing friends this !

➡️ In 2017, EPA implemented a policy that protects bees from pesticides and recommends states and tribes to develop pollinator protection plans.

💭 ? Pollinators play a vital role in keeping people and the planet healthy. They work side by side with humans to nourish and sustain the environment.

Electro-shocking research!⚡

🐟 Earlier this month, EPA New England conducted an electrofishing survey of Harrisville Mill Pond in Burrillville, RI. This study will provide a community characterization in support of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management's census-based survey efforts.

➡️ ? Electrofishing uses an electrical current to momentarily stun fish for collection. This method is often used to collect fish to be analyzed for contaminant levels in fish for consumption, the amount of aquatic life the water can support, or types of fish present in a waterbody.

Tomorrow is Day! 💧

📆 Since the early 1990s EPA and many public and private partners have worked to cleanup and improve water quality in the Charles. Here’s Water Division Director, Ken Moraff, to tell us more about EPA’s work!

🤝 Last week, we joined partners to learn more about watershed water quality and this year’s report cards, which are used to measure, assess, and evaluate bacterial water quality standards for swimming, recreation, boating, and the general health of the watershed.

➡️ ? The Charles River flows 80 miles from Hopkinton, Massachusetts to the Boston Harbor. 🔗 Learn more: https://www.epa.gov/charlesriver
