What an incredible way to celebrate Black Business Month!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support our local small businesses and emerging entrepreneurs at the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts. The day was filled with joy, community, creativity, and innovative ideas brought to life. Seeing our community come together to shop local, support entrepreneurs, and celebrate Black-owned businesses made the event truly special.

A special congratulations to Adjoa Edzie, founder of Gruuvv, who took home the $2,500 Business Prize following the live pitch competition! Your vision, passion, and entrepreneurial spirit stood out, and we are excited to see what comes next for Gruuvv.

Thank you to all of our entrepreneurs who showcased their businesses, shared their ideas, and continue to turn their dreams into opportunities. And thank you to everyone who shopped, encouraged, connected, and invested in these businesses.

When we support local businesses, we build stronger communities.

Support Local. Shop Local. Build Community.

Honoring Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom, Resilience, and Progress

Today, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts joins communities across the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a day that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrates the enduring pursuit of freedom, justice, and equality.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder that freedom delayed is not freedom denied, and that the struggle for equity requires persistence, courage, and collective action.
As we reflect on this historic milestone, we honor the resilience of those who endured the horrors of slavery, the leadership of those who fought for liberation, and the generations who have continued the work of advancing civil rights and economic opportunity.

At the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, our mission remains rooted in the belief that every individual deserves access to education, employment, entrepreneurship, housing, health equity, and the opportunity to thrive. Juneteenth is both a celebration of how far we have come and a call to continue building a society where freedom and opportunity are realities for all.
Today, we celebrate Black excellence, culture, innovation, and community. We recommit ourselves to creating pathways that empower individuals and strengthen families throughout Eastern Massachusetts.

May we honor the legacy of Juneteenth not only through remembrance, but through action.

Happy Juneteenth.
Freedom. Opportunity. Empowerment.

This Memorial Day, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts pays tribute to the courage, humanity, and patriotism of the newly freed Black Americans who helped give birth to what we now know as Memorial Day.

Less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865, formerly enslaved men and women in Charleston, South Carolina honored more than 260 Union soldiers who died in captivity at the Washington Race Course prison camp. Where others left behind death and destruction, these freed Americans chose dignity. They exhumed a mass grave, gave the fallen soldiers proper burials, and built a memorial inscribed with the words: โ€œMartyrs of the Race Course.โ€

On May 1, 1865, thousands gathered in remembrance. Black schoolchildren carried flowers and sang songs of freedom. Black ministers prayed and read scripture. Members of the historic 54th Massachusetts Regiment marched in honor of the fallen.

Their actions were an extraordinary act of compassion and remembrance during one of the most painful chapters in American history. Their legacy reminds us that even in the face of injustice, Black Americans have always fought to uphold the ideals of freedom, service, and community.

Today, we honor the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice and the freed men and women whose courage helped shape the spirit of Memorial Day.

We donโ€™t know them all, but we owe them all.
