North Dakota Forest Service

North Dakota Forest Service The NDFS provides technical, financial and educational assistance related to forests in North Dakota.

A wide variety of customers depend on the North Dakota Forest Service for technical, financial and educational forestry assistance. The state forester administers forestry programs serving communities, rural landowners, soil conservation districts, rural fire districts, schools and citizens of North Dakota. All the programs utilize a voluntary, educational and incentives-based approach to address

natural resource needs and customer demands. The North Dakota Forest Service also operates a nursery at Towner specializing in the production of one million conifer (evergreen) tree stock. The Towner State Nursery is the sole supplier of evergreen seedlings in North Dakota. The agency also owns and manages approximately 13,290 acres of state forestlands.

Wildfire smoke can affect North Dakota’s air quality, even when fires are hundreds of miles away. Smoke can travel long distances and lead to hazy skies, reduced visibility, and elevated levels of fine particles in the air.

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality monitors air quality conditions across the state and shares updates when smoke may impact outdoor activities. Poor air quality can affect anyone, but children, older adults, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions may be especially sensitive to smoke exposure.

Before heading outdoors, check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map for real-time air quality conditions and wildfire smoke impacts in your area: https://fire.airnow.gov/ #7.21/46.825/-100.768

Stay informed and help protect your health during wildfire season. 🔥

Did you know that conifer trees produce two kinds of “cones”? Seed cones and pollen cones are the female and male reproductive structures of conifers. Pollen cones produce pollen that is carried by the wind to fertilize the seed cones, which then develop into mature seeds. You might notice these develop on your evergreen trees like pine and spruce this time of year 🌲

Have you ever thought about how a tiny acorn grows into a mighty oak tree? Our staff at Towner State Nursery get to experience this journey every year-- planting those little seeds in soil and growing them into the seedlings that our customers buy and plant in their conservation plantings. Then from there, they slowly grow into one of North Dakota's most iconic native tree species. 🌳
