For many, Memorial Day is one day on the calendar. For us, remembrance is part of everyday life.

Our brothers and sisters who gave everything are not just names we reflect on once a year. Their sacrifice is present in the work we do, those we still get to serve, and the responsibility we feel to keep showing up.

Today we remember. Tomorrow we continue.

It is an honor to carry their legacy forward every single day.

Navy rep Kevin Marshall!

“I’m a father, avid skier, CrossFitter, and proud dog dad. I served as a Navy Corpsman for 12 years, and the mindset of service and taking care of the people around me has stayed with me long after my time in uniform ended.

After transitioning out, one of the hardest things to navigate has been finding the deeper “why,” in what I do with my time. My work can easily become centered around numbers and deadlines, but I’ve found the most fulfillment through authentic connection, helping people solve problems, and creating real impact in their lives. That desire to serve others never really goes away.

That’s one of the reasons I was drawn to the Big Fish Foundation. I respect organizations that stay true to their mission, and Big Fish is making a real impact by helping veterans through transition, connection, resilience, and purpose. While I haven’t personally benefited from the organization, I believe deeply in what they are building and wanted to support a mission that truly serves the veteran community.

I chose to participate in this fundraiser because I love a challenge and believe there is value in doing hard things alongside other people. The grit, camaraderie, and shared purpose behind this event are the same things that shaped me during my service and continue to shape me today.”

Our final Marine Veteran, Leif Lindstrom!

“I am Leif Lindstrom, just another person trying to enjoy this thing called life. I like being outdoors with dogs, traveling, being with friends and family, long walks on the beach and watching the sunset. My favorite thing is talking nonsense.

The reason the Big Fish Foundation is important to me is because when I got out of the military I felt lost, alone and that I didn’t have a purpose. I was fortunate enough to get into wildland firefighting where I found that connection, purpose and camaraderie with others. I realize that others aren’t that fortunate. This organization connects people and helps them find those items that may have been lost through the service or getting out of the service.

This is my first time participating in an event like this. I feel privileged to be a part of this 30 hour fundraiser; I used to shy away from difficult events and now I can appreciate the challenge.

I’m hoping to be challenged to the point where I want to quit but am able to push through, so I can grow and find that new boundary.“

Another Marine Veteran we can’t wait to see on the floor, Zach Standeford!

“I’m a husband to my wife Lyndsey and a father to our two children, Emory and Owen. My family has been one of God’s greatest gifts in my life, but also the thing that has exposed the most weakness in me. Marriage and fatherhood have forced me to confront pride, selfishness, impatience, and comfort in ways nothing else ever has.

My wife and I own CrossFit Republic in Republic, Missouri. What started as a gym became a community built around shared hardship, accountability, and learning how to endure suffering alongside other people. After transitioning out of the Marine Corps, I had the opportunity to reconnect with that same spirit of service through Patrol Base Abbate’s Strength and Conditioning Club, where I eventually met the staff and volunteers of Big Fish Foundation. The more time I spent around Big Fish, the more obvious it became that this organization was making a real impact in the veteran community through connection, growth, and service.

Over the last several years, I’ve come to believe that suffering will either become an excuse or a calling. I am a Christian, and my faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation for why I’m participating in this challenge.

Big Fish Foundation matters because organizations like this remind people they are still capable of hard things, still needed, and never meant to carry life alone. Isolation destroys people quietly. Community, purpose, and service bring them back to life.”

Kicking off Marines with Kelly Murphy!

“I retired from the Marine Corps in 2012, my transition to civilian life was full of challenges and frustration.  Ruined relationships, hyper focusing on the wrong things and the list goes on.  Being able to help others face those challenges and provide guidance is important to me.

I’ve always relied on physical fitness to help improve my mental fitness. Sometimes a good workout just to clear my headspace.  In 2021, I had the opportunity to join Tosh in a special 30-hour Diesel Day event.  The event was life changing.  It pushed me harder both mentally and physically than ever before.  The camaraderie with my fellow competitors grew stronger with every passing hour and will always be a cherished memory.

The Big Fish Foundation mission is something I can stand behind.  It truly serves the Veteran community by providing much needed support and meaningful connection.“

Another Coast Guard rep, Brock Torre!

“I am a dad, a husband, and a counseling student. Outside of that, I’m also a big fan of the ocean, true crime, and a well-manicured lawn.

The Big Fish Foundation is important to me because it takes a unique approach to serving veterans while providing a lasting and compounding impact on those they reach and beyond.

I chose to participate because I found myself struggling with a loss of identity and purpose after transitioning out of the military, and I saw this as the ideal opportunity to experience similar challenges, camaraderie, and personal growth.

Out of this experience, I’m hoping to gain a renewed perspective on both the challenges and blessings of life, along with a refined mindset in how I approach them.“

Meet our Coast Guard representative, Marshall Thompson!

At the core, I’m a father of three, a coach, and an operator by trade—someone who values consistency, responsibility, and showing up fully. I try to live with intention: with my whole heart, keeping things simple, and doing what I can to support others in finding their own capacity.

Over the past few years, I’ve spent time getting clear on what matters most to me. I’ve come to a simple framework: live fully, live simply, and be of service to others. Big Fish is one of the few places I’ve found where those ideas aren’t just talked about—they’re tested. It creates an environment where you’re pushed beyond what’s comfortable, alongside others doing the same, and in that process you gain a clearer understanding of who you are and what you’re capable of.

That’s why this foundation is important to me. It doesn’t manufacture growth—it creates the conditions where growth becomes unavoidable. The shared challenge builds real connection, and the experience carries forward into how people show up in their families, their work, and their communities. I’ve seen that impact firsthand, and it’s something I want to support and extend.

What I’m hoping to get out of this experience isn’t something new—it’s depth. A deeper understanding of my own limits, and how to move beyond them. A chance to practice staying focused on what matters when things get hard. And the opportunity to bring that perspective back to the people and communities I care about most—especially my kids, and the groups I’m part of every day, including Verdant CrossFit.

This fundraiser is a way to take that personal commitment and extend it outward. If this resonates with you, I’d appreciate your support—at any level. I’ll carry that with me when it counts.

Meet our Army representative, Steven Bell!

My name is Steven Bell. I’m 40 yrs old and live in northern California. I served in the 3rd Ranger Battalion and now am a journeyman lineman. I enjoy hunting, fishing, camping with wife and step son and any form of competition.

Big Fish Foundation is important to me because I truly believe there is lack of support and resources for the warriors of our nation and their families. Talking to other veterans and reading the testimonials from their partcipation shows me they are an organization that truly does care and is making a difference.

I chose to participate in this year’s 30 hour challenge because I believe in the Big Fish Foundation’s mission and enjoy every aspect of endurance compition. To be able to support my fellow veterans who are struggling and to test my own mental and physical fortitude against some amazing athletes is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

At this event, I’m hoping to raise substantial funds for the Big Fish Foundation so they can continue to change lives. Also, I want to push myself to my own personal limits and see how deep I can dig both mentally and physically.
