The March 4th meeting of the City of Boulder’s Landmarks Board marked the end of a remarkable run of community service on behalf of historic preservation for Abby Daniels. Abby’s eight-year tenure on the board began in 2018, spanned the COVID pandemic, and included the designation of 33 individual landmarks. Abby’s gracious demeanor, welcoming attitude to those appearing before the Board and her steadfast advocacy for preservation will be hard to replace.

And, of course, Abby served for over 11 years as Executive Director of Historic Boulder. Her contributions to preservation and the Boulder community during her long career are remarkable.
Abby, we commend you, wish you the best in your future endeavors and hope they will continue to include historic preservation!

The landmark shown last month is the former Mount Calvary Lutheran Church located in the Table Mesa neighborhood at 3485 Stanford Court. While it served the community for decades with weekly services and a local childcare center, the property was purchased in 2016 by the Boulder Housing Partners for redevelopment into affordable housing. Now that the congregation has relocated, the historic church building is supposed to be renovated as a community center for the new apartments and nearby neighborhood, but the reconstruction has not yet begun.

The Dark Horse had been part of Boulder’s cultural fabric for so long that many of us are seeking a meaningful way to honor it and bid farewell.

Once again, Joel Smiley General Construction is the Historic Boulder, Inc. featured business member. Over many years his company has become one of the best residential construction companies for historic properties in Boulder.

When it comes to renovating historic properties, contractor Joel Smiley interprets classic details into 21st century lifestyles for remodels, additions and new construction. Recently he has been providing construction advice and actual work for the renovation of the interior of the Chautauqua Auditorium. That includes updating the details so the venue can be used in cold weather months for use by for the Sundance Film Festival and other performances. Work has begun to provide radiant heated floors under the spectator seating.
