Center for People With Disabilities

Center for People With Disabilities CPWD offers a new model for community integration.

Since 1977 CPWD has been the center of a network of resources, information and services to assist people with disabilities to conquer the barriers, the isolation and the dependency. We encourage you to work with us to build this new accessible welcoming community, learn from neighbors or teach fellow citizens that are struggling for their independence.

June and July belong together.

Pride Month and Disability Pride Month are often treated as separate celebrations. But for a significant part of our community, they are one story told in two chapters.
The overlap between LGBTQ+ and disability identities is not a footnote. 36% of LGBTQ+ adults report having a disability. And both movements share the same demand: that every body, every life, belongs fully in public life.

From Stonewall to the Capitol Crawl, these are communities that have fought for self-determination, redesigned the world for everyone in the process, and built power through solidarity.

This summer, we are celebrating what happens when both movements build together.

Before Maya leaves home for a farmers market, she checks curb cuts, elevator status, and whether the accessible restroom is actually unlocked. This is what millions of people with mobility disabilities navigate every single day.

This Mobility Awareness Month, we're looking at the history of accessibility advocacy, the technology reshaping independence, and the work still ahead. Read the full article at the link below.

For Maya, getting to a farmers market means checking curb cuts, elevator status, and door weights before she ever leaves home. Her experience reflects what millions of people with mobility disabilities know every day: accessibility isn't a design feature. It's the difference between participating in

Accessibility is a global conversation, and it's moving fast.

When Mind Prawatsrichai visited us from Bangkok, she came to learn about our consumer-directed approach to disability services. What she found was a community built on the belief that people with disabilities are the experts on their own lives.

Mind's visit reminded us that this work doesn't stop at borders. Advocates around the world are asking the same questions and sharing answers. Read the full story and watch Mind's video at the link.

This May, we're holding two truths at once.

At the national level, federal Medicaid cuts and ongoing disruptions at SAMHSA have created real uncertainty for people with disabilities who depend on mental health services. The stakes are high and the disability community is paying attention.

But here in Colorado, something different is happening. Lawmakers have been building. New laws are protecting mental health parity. Colorado submitted a major application in March that could bring significant new behavioral health funding to our state.

Our latest blog post breaks down what's actually changed, what's still at stake, and what CPWD is doing to help people navigate it all.

Every May, Mental Health Awareness Month invites us to look honestly at where we are β€” and this year, that means holding two truths at once. At the national level, federal Medicaid cuts and instability at SAMHSA have created real uncertainty for people with disabilities who depend on mental health...

CPWD is hosting a community feedback session with the City of Longmont and RTD to review draft designs for the new 1st & Main Transit Station, and we want to hear from people with disabilities about what accessibility really looks like in practice.
