June 1st

Today marks 1 year since the terrorist attack on our community.

We will forever remember Karen Diamond, and all of the survivors whose lives were changed by the attack.

Much has been said about the initial response, and the diligent work by our dispatchers and first responding officers. The bravery, dedication and investigation that day and in the days, weeks and months that followed were critical in bringing justice to the victims and restoring a sense of safety to our community. We could not have done all that we did without our local, state and federal partners who assisted.

As Chief Redfearn said after the suspect’s court hearing, the message is clear: hate will not win.

“It is remarkable that in just one calendar year, our suspect in this case has already been brought to justice by the amazing work of our detectives and partners in the D.A.’s Office,” Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said.

“I have seen very few defendants that deserve the harshest of penalties as much as this guy. While we sadly couldn’t prevent his hate fueled actions that day, a message can be sent. Not only a message to this guy that he has demonstrated that he should never be a free man again, but a message to anyone else that might think they can come into our community and cause harm: they won’t win. We will not only come together and persevere over hate, but we will hold those who harm others accountable and ensure that they can never harm another soul.”

“You ever get those warrants taken care of?”

Several of you have reached out to us recently to report the illegal activity you’ve seen near Arapahoe and Broadway

We take the complaints seriously and between other calls for service, we work to address them. That’s why we’re sharing this example. Our Neighborhood Impact Team officers saw a man they’d arrested before and knew he had active warrants.

“Hey Brandon! You ever get those warrants taken care of?” the officer asked him. The man took off running.

After the team safely took him into custody without injury on his four outstanding warrants, he was booked into the Boulder County jail on charges including felony assault and misdemeanor theft out of one county; two warrants from previous Boulder charges; as well as new charges of obstruction and resisting arrest. As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

If you see something, say something, Boulder.

What Goes Up

This week Boulder Police officers were investigating a crash in the early morning hours when one of them heard a loud bang.

Within minutes Dispatch received a call about a man firing his gun in the air while arguing with another man then driving away.

Officers flooded the area and quickly found the suspect’s vehicle. Take a look at what we found in his car.

Thankfully no one was hurt and the suspect was arrested without incident. As officers investigated, they found several bottles of alcohol inside the car as well as a long rifle and several firearm accessories, including a 45-round magazine.

The man was booked into the Boulder County jail on felony menacing, felony large capacity magazine possession, misdemeanor possession/use of a weapon while intoxicated and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Do we really have to say don’t drink and handle fi****ms?

Stay safe out there, Boulder. We’re here if you need us.

As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

It is an honor to pause and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. The freedoms we enjoy every day are made possible by their sacrifice.

We ask that the Boulder community take a moment today to reflect with us on the selflessness of our service men and women, living and past. From all of us at the Boulder Police Department, we remember the fallen and extend our gratitude to the families, friends, and service members who maintain the legacy of those they lost

Welcome New BPD Officers!

Please join us in congratulating our five new officers who graduated Saturday from the Aims Community College Police Academy!

Chief Redfearn, who was also asked to be the keynote speaker at the graduation, attended the ceremony with several members of the Command Staff and Training Team. It was clear from speaking with the instructors and staff that our officers stood out as talented individuals in the class.

We’re also proud that Officer McCoy received the award for top Academic Achievement in the class!

The officers come to Boulder through a variety of paths, some growing up here in the city, others coming for a variety of reasons, and all learning that Boulder is a great place to serve.

They’ve just completed 16 long weeks at the Academy learning about a variety of law enforcement topics from constitutional law to physical fitness to arrest control, fi****ms and so much more.

Now they’ll start six weeks in our Boulder Police mini academy followed by 17 weeks of field training with a field training instructor.

Congratulations Officers Alpizar-Hernandez, Hickenbottom, McCoy, Rosas, and Rouhselang. We are glad you chose to serve with us at BPD!

On our final Why I Wear the Badge series this week Sergeant Hartkopp, one of our SWAT operators, shares why he’s proud to serve our community.

Every May the country recognizes the honor, courage, sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers. Originally established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

National Police week is both a time of solemn remembrance and a celebration of the women and men who serve with integrity and bravery every day. It reminds us that behind every badge is a story of service, sacrifice and family.

We have a few more whys to share with you today as we close out National Police Week. This is why Officer Johnson, who visited our nation’s Capitol this week representing BPD, wears the badge.
