National Ecological Observatory Network

National Ecological Observatory Network The NSF's NEON, operated by Battelle, provides open access data and infrastructure to study how our nation's ecosystems change over time.

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a continental-scale ecological observation system, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and managed by Battelle, that provides free and open data. Standardized data collection methods are used at all of NEON's field sites which are strategically located in a variety of ecosystems across the U.S. Data are collected using automated instru

ments, airborne remote sensing equipment and on the ground observational sampling by field scientists. Data will be collected over the course of 30 years. The data and resources that NEON provides will help scientists and decision makers integrate and use ecological observations across multiple scales, detect changes to our nation's ecosystems and enable environmental forecasting.

The NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology (PRFB) solicitation is open! While potential applicants need to propose their postdoc at an academic institution, NEON invites proposers to reach out to have a NEON scientist as a technical expert or co-mentor. An additional opportunity to work on a proposal is available from the PI of the NEON Biorepository at Arizona State University. Proposers can also explore NEON Research Support Services (NRSS) to see if NEON resources and infrastructure may meet their research needs. Learn more about how NEON can support a proposal: https://buff.ly/5F1QZcz

Tiny creatures. Big ecological question. 🐛

What drives change in aquatic communities? NEON data is helping scientists understand what drives community synchrony in stream macroinvertebrates—and it’s not what you might expect. Turns out, how species eat might matter more than anything else. Read more in the blog: https://buff.ly/qTtucPG

No single method can scale a field measurement to a continent. So how do you do it?
Researchers tackled that question in Boulder, CO at the Remote Sensing and Fluxes for Real-world Impact Workshop. Learn more about it in the blog, “NEON Live: Connecting Flux Data, Remote Sensing and AI”: https://buff.ly/h25dHPp
