Today, EFAA is closed in honor of Juneteenth – our nation’s second independence day. It marks the day when federal troops arrived in Texas in 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people were freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Here’s a photo of a Juneteenth celebration in Texas in 1900, 35 years after that historic day.

If you’ve been thinking about it, this is a great opportunity to get involved and give back, especially high school students off for the summer.

The minimum age to volunteer is 15 without an adult, or 12 with an adult. Spanish language skills are a plus!

Behind closed doors, an urgent crisis is unfolding: 18.4% of families with children are fighting a daily battle against hunger and are classified as food insecure.

For many of these families, adults are the only ones skipping meals. But in about 10% of households, everyone (including kids) is food insecure.
