Boulder Food Rescue is a non-profit organization whose goal is to create a more just and less wasteful food system. We facilitate the sustainable redistribution of food that would otherwise be wasted to No Cost Grocery Programs at affordable housing sites, schools, and daycares.

Rootable was at the Health Symposium

We had the honor to present our Rootable at the Colorado Health Foundation Symposium in July in collaboration with Denver Food Rescue and Food to Power. We were able to connect with other organizers across Colorado who are responding to our current crisis by creating at-home delivery programs, but do not have the data secure software they need to keep their communities safe. We made great connections and hope that more organizations will be able to use the software as they continue their work in their communities. In addition, we recently added Trackers to Rootable, which allows staff members to “track” a subset of shifts, which could include anything from collecting specific reports for a grant to understanding a volunteer’s impact.

After many years of volunteering with BFR, one of our couriers is moving. He dedicated his time to having a consistent weekly shift at BFR but more importantly, really building relationships with the people at the community he dropped food to. Residents at a BHP community got together as a community to put together a Bon Voyage card for him that everyone signed, and let us know how grateful they were to Jonah and to BFR for the deliveries and relationships. “Jonah set the bar high for whoever will take his place!”

Most importantly, here is how Jonah described his experience: I started volunteering with BFR in 2018 after first moving to Boulder. I did some food justice work in undergrad and loved that BFR also involved biking! I also found that I enjoyed slowly building relationships with volunteers at the receiving organizations. I would only see them for a few minutes each week, but working the same shift over a long time really added up. I paused volunteering for a few years due a move and health issues, but I always knew I wanted to come back. I had the same shift for the last 3ish years and especially enjoyed working with a BHP community, and Sprouts Arapahoe. Everyone is incredibly warm and helpful and I love starting my week with my Monday morning shift :slightly_smiling_face:

Immigrant families continue to face financial instability and food insecurity during increased attacks on due process and civil rights. Signing up for federal food programs puts visas in jeopardy. Fear of deportation and increased surveillance means less food pantry visits. Grassroots food access agencies and mutual-aid groups are responding to increased ICE presence with direct home delivery food programs. While many in our community are mobilized to work on this issue, few have the software infrastructure to ensure data privacy and meet basic organizing needs. This is where Rootable comes in.

For years we’ve been developing our processes for Rootable, our cooperatively owned software owned by 4 Colorado food rescues. Each co-op owner is adjusting their daily logistics to reflect the realities immigrants face while we support each other. We discussed our logistics amongst ourselves and within state-wide and local food coalitions. We created a list of features that would allow us to safely deliver food while ensuring data security and volunteer vetting. We completed our first task: translating Rootable into Spanish. While we have a few more features we’re prioritizing to complete the project, we are grateful to be able to present this collaborative work at the state-wide conference at the end of the month. Our hopes are to engage more immigration organizers, funders and advocates to join us in this venture.

If you’re interested in contributing yourself to help us reach our fundraising goal, or learning more about the “Keep Immigrants Safe” season of our development, please reach out to [email protected]
