Boulder Food Rescue is a non-profit organization whose goal is to create a more just and less wasteful food system. We facilitate the sustainable redistribution of food that would otherwise be wasted to No Cost Grocery Programs at affordable housing sites, schools, and daycares.

We got a chance recently to catch up with our long time volunteer, Brad Reaves. Here's a bit of what he had to say about volunteering with BFR.

What do you do with BFR?

Deliver Food from Sprouts Arapahoe

How long have you been volunteering with BFR?

7 Years

What motivates you to continue volunteering with us?

I enjoy the exercise and helping the community

What is one of your proudest moments as a volunteer?

In general, delivering as much food as possible on the bike.

Can you share a special memory you have while volunteering for BFR?

Pulling 300 lbs up the Fulsom hill

If you could let the Boulder people know one thing about food justice what would it be?

There is a lot of food that is wasted that is perfectly good. We should be less picky about eating things past their expiration date or that are not perfect.

It takes a tremendous amount of water to grow the food that we eat, and when we waste food, we waste water. With this year's drought conditions, we can not afford to waste water.

Storing as many ingredients separately is a powerful food saving tip. This allows you to turn those ingredients into new meals.

For example, if you have an excess of mashed potatoes and gravy, if you store them together, they can only be eaten together, but if you store them separately, then the potatoes can be made into flautas, and the gravy can be incorporated into a soup. Storing ingredients separately allows you to reuse them in novel ways, creating excitement around new meals in place of dread for more leftovers.
