Boulder Food Rescue is a non-profit organization whose goal is to create a more just and less wasteful food system. We facilitate the sustainable redistribution of food that would otherwise be wasted to No Cost Grocery Programs at affordable housing sites, schools, and daycares.

In May, we showed up again at the ReFED Food Waste Summit in Charlotte, NC. Rootable hosted a sponsorship table to be able to engage with attendees about our software and whether or not it would be useful to them. The main takeaway: people were very interested in the cooperative nature of Rootable, and having the ability to make changes to their essential operating infrastructure.

Food Rescue Alliance hosted several gatherings throughout the conference as well. We met with other FRA members across the country in person over drinks, breakfast, at our table, and all throughout the days. We hosted alternative programming conversations about food sovereignty and had great conversations with other food rescue representatives we had never met before. Gathering in person, when so much of our work is virtual, was a special treat for us all to build deeper connections with one another.

With increased attacks on immigrants, due process, and civil rights, immigrant families continue to face financial instability and food insecurity. Visas are put in jeopardy by signing up for federal food programs. Fear of deportation leads to decreased use of food pantries. Increased surveillance limits movement.

Food pantries and mutual-aid groups are responding to increased ICE presence with direct home delivery food programs. While many in our community are mobilized to work on this issue, few have infrastructure that is data secure and meets basic organizing needs.

Rootable is volunteer logistics software that supports organizations to coordinate volunteers in local resource redistribution, both onsite and through delivery routes. We are a cooperative of technologists and food access agencies working together to deliver food without making people vulnerable to government cruelties, by focusing on data ownership/privacy, volunteer vetting, and features that serve communities and meet changing needs.

We have begun the process of translating Rootable into Spanish, and are in need of a few more features to meet the current demand. In order to respond effectively to this crisis, we are trying to raise $60,000 - 180,000 to expand features for immigration organizers.

Our regional and national movement building programs were represented at two conferences in the last two months.

At the Zero Waste Forum, in Park City, UT in April, our Co-Director Hayden Dansky gave a presentation for Food Rescue Alliance about our national network and setting up systems of collaboration over competition. Our colleague, Jamie Anderson, Executive Director of Denver Food Rescue, represented our cooperative software Rootable on a panel about using technology for zero waste. Currently, our food system waste 40% of all the food that it produces. This is unacceptable while so many people live with food insecurity.

Some of the most effective ways that you can cut down on your own food waste is through proper food storage, cooking accurate portions to what you will be eating, and purchasing foods at a rate that you will go through them.
