Rest in peace, K9 Saar. 🐾

K9 Saar began her service with the Montana Highway Patrol in 2014 after coming to Montana from a kennel in Holland. She was first stationed in Billings before joining MHP’s East Interdiction Team shortly after its inception.

For 7.5 years, Saar faithfully served alongside her handler, Trooper Darvin Mees. The two retired together in 2021, and Saar traded life on patrol for retirement along the Missouri River.

She transitioned from working K9 to beloved family pet with ease — even becoming the unlikely favorite companion of the family cat.

Saar celebrated her 15th birthday in July. On August 31, 2026, after age-related health issues caught up with her, Saar was peacefully set free.

Thank you for your years of loyal service, Saar. You served Montana well and will be deeply missed.

Rest easy, K9 Saar. 💙🐾

During our annual district tour trips, we recognize troopers across the state for their work beyond the badge. Congratulations to this year’s award recipients for the Hedstrom Award, which are given to troopers for going above and beyond the call of duty in saving a life. The Hedstrom Award is the Division’s second highest award. It is typically given to troopers who attempt to “save a life,” by using their first responder skills. Generally, this award will be given for going “above and beyond” the normal call of duty. The award may also be given to MHP civilian personnel. This year, the Hedstrom Award was given to:

• Trooper Jesse Berg — District 5
• Trooper Tierney Wienholz — SETT (two awards)
• Trooper Jordan Barfuss — District 3
• Trooper Gamal Selim — District 3

Today we honor Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Evan Fredrick Schneider, who made the ultimate sacrifice on August 26, 2008, when his patrol car was hit head-on by a drunk driver near Columbia Falls.
Trooper Schneider lived a life of selfless service, joining the Marines and then later the Montana Highway Patrol, which he served for over 4 years.
Trooper Schneider embodied what it means to be a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper. He was a loving husband, a dedicated family man, a trusted coworker, and someone whom the community admired.
Trooper Schneider was survived by his wife Carrie, his brother Jim, and his parents Gordon Schneider and Becky Sturdevant.
May Trooper Schneider’s memory forever be a blessing.

Over the past two weeks, Montana Highway Patrol leadership has been hitting the road for our annual district tours, visiting each of our seven districts across the state.

These meetings give our troopers and command staff a chance to come together, collaborate and talk about what’s happening in each district—from staffing and recruitment to crash trends, equipment, technology, policies and the unique challenges facing different areas of Montana.

With more than 100,000 traffic stops each year, these conversations help ensure MHP continues moving forward as one team with one mission: Service, Integrity and Respect.

Colonel Kurt Sager was proud to recognize several troopers their hard work and commitment to Montana!
