SPAN is a human rights organization committed to ending violence against adults, youth, and children through support, advocacy, education and community organizing. SPAN began providing services in 1979 and is crucial to the network of support that offers critical “safety net” services to vulnerable, low-income and at-risk populations. It is the only organization serving Boulder, western Broomfield

, smaller towns and unincorporated Boulder County designed to provide shelter and advocacy for victims of interpersonal violence at a time when our community is experiencing higher domestic violence rates than national and state averages.

Every survivor deserves safety. Every call for help deserves an answer.

Domestic violence remains one of the most urgent crises in our communities. Nearly 1 in 3 women worldwide will experience intimate partner or sexual violence in their lifetime (World Health Organization).

In 2025, U.S. programs served more than 84,000 survivors in a single day, while over 13,000 requests for help went unmet due to a lack of shelter and housing.

Behind every number is a person seeking safety and a chance to rebuild.

One survivor came to Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) after escaping nine months of captivity in a basement. With her young son, she fled with nothing but the determination to keep him safe.

At SPAN she found safety, support, and a path forward. Through shelter, advocacy, and ongoing care, she rebuilt her life. Today, she is thriving in her community and her son is flourishing in school.

Because of your support, survivors are met with safety instead of uncertainty, and care instead of isolation. Thank you for standing with survivors and helping make healing possible.

We were proud to be part of Boulder County’s Elder Abuse Awareness event yesterday 💜

This powerful community gathering focused on moving beyond recognizing the signs of elder abuse and toward concrete, actionable strategies for prevention and intervention.

We heard opening remarks from Boulder DA's Office, 20th Judicial District - DA Michael Dougherty and an inspiring keynote from Bonnie Brandl, a national leader in elder justice advocacy and founder of the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life - NCALL .

The multidisciplinary panel included representatives from Boulder Police Department, Adult Protective Services, Senior Services in Longmont, and romance scam survivor Debbie Fox (FLOW with Debbie Fox) , whose story highlighted the real impact of financial exploitation and the importance of community education and support.

Thank you to Boulder County Government for hosting and to everyone who stopped by the SPAN table to connect with us.

Together, we can build a community where older adults are treated with dignity, respect, and safety.

Hosted by Boulder County Government, this free community event is focused on more than recognizing the signs—we’re calling for concrete, actionable strategies that help prevent abuse and ensure effective intervention when it occurs.

Keynote speaker: Bonnie Brandl, a national expert in elder justice and advocacy.

The event will feature a multidisciplinary panel of local service providers and law enforcement and highlight local resources available to assist older adults and those who care for them.

Together, we can foster a community of dignity and respect for older adults in Boulder County.

Did you know? In Colorado, doctors are mandatory reporters in specific situations—but not for domestic violence between adults, provided the victim is at least 18 years old and prefers that the incident not be reported.

That means you can talk to your doctor about intimate partner violence in most cases without it being reported to law enforcement.

If you’re unsure, you can always ask your provider about confidentiality before sharing.

Healthcare visits can be a safe place to:

• Get medical care
• Access support and resources
• Start safety planning

SPAN will be there tabling and connecting with community members! We're proud to be part of JCALL (Justice Coalition on Abuse in Later Life), which works to prevent abuse in later life and improve community responses to elder mistreatment.

🙌 Youth supporting youth! 🙌

Youth-led change is at the heart of SPAN's youth program, Peers Building Justice (PBJ), which is why we're especially excited to receive a grant from 15 Forever, a youth-led philanthropy program of Community Foundation Boulder County! 🎉

In the photo, SPAN's Director of Education & Community Outreach, Abbie Lewis, proudly accepts the grant award on behalf of PBJ.

PBJ empowers Boulder and Broomfield County youth ages 13–18 to identify community needs, lead projects, and create positive change. This funding will support PBJ's next initiative exploring q***r and disabled youth experiences with sexual education curriculum, while also helping provide meals and stipends for youth participants.

What makes this grant especially meaningful is that it was awarded by a board of local high school students who research community issues, raise funds, and select projects that will make an impact for their peers.

Thank you to Community Foundation Boulder County for investing in youth leadership and youth-driven solutions. We can't wait to share more about this project in the coming year!

A major step forward for survivor safety in Colorado. 💜

Today, HB26-1009, the Colorado Mandatory Lethality Assessment Act, was signed by Governor Jared Polis.

SPAN Executive Director Heather Marcy worked alongside community partners to advocate for the advancement of this legislation because it’s important for the people we serve.

In recent years domestic violence fatality rates have gone up despite homicide rates decreasing in Colorado. In response to that, communities came together with a goal of specifically preventing domestic violence fatalities.

The Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) is an evidenced based tool that helps slow down time and space after a domestic violence incident, to assess the risk of lethality and provide survivors with connection to often lifesaving services.

Together, we have built an ecosystem of intervention and support that is delivered in the moment. And this is one of the ways that we are helping to create better outcomes for survivors.

This bill would ensure that every county in the state is providing this screening.

We are grateful to everyone who helped make this legislation a reality and look forward to its impact across Colorado.

Great news!

Since 2023, SPAN has responded to more than 700 high-risk referrals in Boulder, Broomfield, and Adams counties, with nearly half of those individuals becoming SPAN clients. These numbers demonstrate both the effectiveness of the program and the urgent need for these services.

HB26-1009 ensures that every county in Colorado has access to this critical intervention.

Today’s signing marks an important step forward in preventing domestic violence fatalities and supporting survivors across our state.
