PRESS RELEASE — I-44 WESTBOUND TRAFFIC INCIDENT

Today at approximately 3:34 PM, Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District and Phelps Health EMS were dispatched to Interstate 44 westbound near the 179 mile marker for a tractor-trailer that had struck a Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) truck.

DRFPD units 6610, 6618, 6619, and 6638 responded. First-arriving crews found a heavily damaged tractor-trailer blocking the roadway and a MoDOT truck in the median that had been struck from the rear.

The MoDOT truck was equipped with a Truck-Mounted Attenuator (TMA), which sustained significant damage during the collision. These devices are specifically designed to absorb and dissipate the tremendous energy generated when another vehicle strikes the rear of a highway work vehicle.

The damage to the attenuator demonstrates exactly why this equipment is so important. It absorbed a substantial portion of the impact before that force could reach the MoDOT truck and the two workers inside. Given the severity of the collision and the damage to the tractor-trailer, the outcome could have been considerably worse without that protection in place.

Two occupants of the MoDOT truck remained inside the vehicle following the collision and reported multiple injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer reported minor injuries. Due to the number of patients, Command requested a second ambulance to the scene.

Both occupants of the MoDOT truck were transported by Phelps Health EMS to Phelps Health for treatment. The tractor-trailer driver declined medical treatment.

Once all patients had been evaluated and transferred to the care of EMS, DRFPD personnel turned their attention to an oil spill and other hazards created by the collision. Crews worked to contain the spill and assist with making the roadway safe.

This incident is another reminder of the dangers faced by highway workers every day. The attenuator on this MoDOT truck did exactly what it was designed to do—take the hit and help protect the people working behind it.

When approaching highway workers, emergency vehicles, or work zones, slow down, move over, and give them room to work safely.

So many people including firefighters have no idea the hazards and dangers these mobility devices provide on public transportation.

Understanding how to respond appropriately, and keep these emergencies from occurring are the key to saving lives as the use of these devices are exploding across the country and the world!

Protecting the public and firefighters is becoming a critical component of our daily lives.

More battery-powered devices mean more unknowns for those responding when something goes wrong — from company officers to transit officials keeping riders safe.

Our researchers Adam Barowy and Craig Weinschenk were recently featured in Bicycling magazine’s deep dive into the growing e-bike battery fire problem. Adam points to the knowledge gap in this area: "The type of incident data that we're discussing doesn't really readily exist."

That's what we're actively working to change.

NERIS, the new national reporting system for fire and emergency services, tracks how often these fires happen — and will help capture the detail required to explain why.

🚨 Preconference Course Announcement: Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Fuel Systems

Alternative-fuel vehicles are becoming more common on Indiana roadways—and responders must be prepared to recognize their fuel systems, understand their hazards, and safely manage emergencies involving them.

Join instructor Tim Ferretti of Ferretti Salvage and Recycling for an eight-hour hybrid course combining classroom instruction with extensive hands-on training.

FSR brings actual CNG, LNG, and hydrogen fuel-system components into the classroom. Participants will work with functional training stations powered by compressed air and practice mitigation tactics through multiple realistic scenarios.

Topics will include:

✅ Identifying CNG, LNG, and hydrogen fuel systems
✅ Recognizing common and unique system components
✅ Assessing hazards during AFV emergencies
✅ Applying practical system-control and mitigation tactics
✅ Improving responder safety during high-risk vehicle incidents
