**Mosquito Control: More Than Spraying**

Information for Village of Bourbonnais residents: Mosquitoes can develop resistance when the same insecticides are used repeatedly. A recent North Carolina study found resistance-related mutations spreading rapidly in residential neighborhoods, although those findings are not specific to Bourbonnais.

The EPA and CDC recommend a balanced approach: empty standing water each week, clean gutters, maintain window screens, use EPA-registered repellent and follow all pesticide labels carefully. Personal spraying can still be useful, but it should not be our only method of mosquito control.

Working together and removing mosquito breeding areas can make a meaningful difference throughout our community.

My thoughts and prayers are with our Public Works Administrator, Terry, and his family during this difficult time following the passing of his mother. Terry pours so much dedication into serving our village every day, and please help to surround him with that same care and support now. May her memory and wisdom bring comfort to Terry's family.

Please share with all your friends. It's been a very rainy summer, do your part with standing water.

🦟 Targeting Mosquitoes at the Source

The Village of Bourbonnais has expanded its mosquito abatement program to provide more comprehensive mosquito control throughout our community.

In previous years, larvicide treatments were applied to catch basins around the Village (notorious for standing, stagnate water).

Beginning this season, the Village will include the treatment of all Village owned ponds, about 15 acres worth. In addition, we will include private ponds, where allowed. And that includes about 13 acres of additional water.

Why the change? Research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has shown that controlling mosquitoes at the larval stage is one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito populations. By treating breeding areas before mosquitoes hatch, we can significantly reduce the number of biting adult mosquitoes while minimizing the need for widespread adult mosquito spraying.

Unlike traditional fogging, which targets only flying adult mosquitoes that are present at the time of application, larvicide works where mosquitoes begin their life cycle—in standing water. This preventative approach provides longer-lasting mosquito control and helps protect beneficial pollinators and other non-target insects, including bees and butterflies, that are vital to our local ecosystem.

Mosquito control is most successful when the entire community works together. Residents can help by eliminating standing water around their homes, including bird baths, buckets, clogged gutters, flowerpot saucers, children's toys, and other containers where mosquitoes can breed. Even small amounts of standing water can become breeding sites.

By expanding this program village wide, Bourbonnais is taking a proactive, science-based approach that protects public health, supports environmental stewardship, and helps create a more comfortable outdoor experience for everyone.

Thank you for doing your part to help reduce mosquitoes in Bourbonnais!

As Illinois prepares to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, residents of the Village of Bourbonnais have a special opportunity to help preserve our local voice in our nation’s history.

Through Illinois Voices 250, residents are invited to share personal stories, memories, and reflections about life in Illinois. These recordings will be preserved in the United States Library of Congress, making sure voices from communities like Bourbonnais become part of America’s historical record.

Bourbonnais has a rich history, strong families, longtime residents, local traditions, and stories worth saving. As Trustee, I believe part of serving our village is continuing to learn.

That is why attending the Illinois Municipal League Conference in September is important to me. It gives local leaders a chance to learn about roads, public safety, budgets, new laws, and better ways to serve residents.

I also get to hear ideas from other communities across Illinois and bring helpful information back to Bourbonnais.

Good leadership means listening, learning, and working to make informed decisions for the people we serve.

🚰 WATER SYSTEM FLUSHING NOTICE 🚰

Aqua Illinois will be conducting routine water main and fire hydrant flushing in Bradley and Bourbonnais from June 15 through July 31, 2026, between approximately 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

This maintenance helps remove naturally occurring mineral buildup from water lines and ensures fire hydrants are operating properly. During this time, residents may experience temporary water discoloration or reduced water pressure. While the minerals are not harmful, please use caution when doing laundry.

After flushing has been completed in your area, Aqua recommends:
• Cleaning faucet aerators
• Running an outside spigot for a few minutes to clear any sediment
• Flushing your water heater according to the manufacturer's recommendations

If you have questions or experience service issues, please contact Aqua at 1-877-987-2782.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as Aqua continues to maintain and improve water service in our community.
