A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation

A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation The A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation was co-founded by family members of ALS patients to help others living with this terrible disease. Sciaba, Sr.

The Foundation provides New England area patients and their families with the best possible financial and emotional support through their unique ALS journey. Family Charitable Foundation of Bourne, MA was co-founded by family members of ALS patients with the belief that once you are affected by this terrible disease, you become part of our family. Mary Ann (Sciaba) Singersen lost her father Edward

J. and Donna Jordan lost her brother Clifford Jordan, Jr. far too soon to this disease. The two women met volunteering in the ALS community and decided to form our Foundation AND continue the Walk that Cliff (the Walk is named after him!) started years earlier and honor their loved one’s memory by helping others. The “Cliff Walk” is also held in memory of Janice Ferrara, as her family members, Lenny and Tony Ferrara have generously sponsored the Walk every year and remain deeply committed to our cause. This Foundation puts our ALS families first in everything we do. Our in-house programs (http://www.alsfamily.org/index.php/patient-support/our-programs); are open to New England area families and are designed to alleviate some of the financial and emotional burdens of living with ALS. Over the years we have watched our families come and go, each new diagnosis strengthening our resolve and commitment to our motto, “Until there is a cure, there is the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation”. A diagnosis of ALS is one of the worst things that can happen to a person. They lose their health, independence and financial security. And as we know all too well, when one family member is diagnosed with ALS, they all live it. That is where we come in. Our Foundation helps in a way that these families really need. We help keep the lights and heat on for the family; we help send children of our patients to college; we help the patient get as good a night’s sleep as they are able to; we help families take what often times is their last vacation together to make some wonderful memories; we take away the fear of not having enough to make the holidays joyous and back to school shopping fun; and we make sure that caregivers are able to take time to take care of themselves, and so much more. And of course, we also fund research efforts to find better treatment options and a cure.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to contribute a video or note to this wonderful tribute!

It has been the opportunity of a lifetime to help patients and their families for these many years and I cannot wait to see what unfolds in this next chapter.

Thanks also to my friend and cofounder Donna Jordan for the many ways you made everything possible—and for this lovely keepsake video! Here it is for anyone who’d like to see.

With this past Sunday's Cliff Walk as our last hurrah, we are now winding down here at ALS Family Charitable Foundation. Thank you to all who who came out to mark the tradition.

We are truly grateful for all your support throughout the years: it has been an honor to care for the New England ALS families we have encountered and supported.

For those who were unable to attend the last Cliff Walk, here's a video of Mary Ann's final speech as our leader & President.

To our beloved ALS Family,

We’ve made the heart-wrenching decision to close our Foundation on September 30th. Since 2001, we’ve been supporting ALS research efforts and putting our ALS families first, as we know first hand how devastatingly horrific this disease is physically, financially, and emotionally.

Sadly, due to COVID-19, we have been unable to hold most of our fundraising events to continue to provide financial assistance to patients and their families through our many Patient Programs. It is because of our inability to help families as we have in the past, and continuing concerns about COVID and the economy that we have made the extremely difficult decision to close. While we're hopeful with the promising reports from some of the clinical trials, one of our greatest regrets is to leave before there is a cure.

However, we are able to close with confidence that there is an organization that holds our same values of families first. The Susie Foundation and their founder Ryan Matthews are well-established and well known to us. We have provided major grants to TSF in the past specifically because we believe in their mission and their methods of direct support, and they will be the recipient of all remaining funds as well as any donations that come in for the Cliff Walk. We trust TSF as a steward of our mission to put families first, and please check out their website for more information at thesusiefoundation.org. We truly hope you will support this exceptional organization as you have us: they do great work for New England families living with ALS.

We will gather one last time, on Sunday September 11th at Buzzards Bay Park, Main Street, Buzzards Bay, where our Cliff Walk has taken place for so many years. There will not be any of the usual festivities; no music, food or raffles, but this is an opportunity to get together one last time at this special place that is near and dear to our hearts. Bring picnics, blankets, chairs - and of course, proudly wear your amazing team tees.

If you would like to collect or make a donation to bring to the final Cliff Walk, please feel free to make checks payable to The Susie Foundation. Any checks made to our Foundation or cash received will be passed along to TSF.

Donna and I thank you for your support and dedication through the years. Our work with the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation and our patients and their families in loving memory of Cliff Jordan, Jr. and Edward J. Sciaba, Sr. has been the privilege of a lifetime. We could not have accomplished all that we have without the endless support of our ALS families, our volunteers, staff and sponsors. You will forever remain in our hearts.
