This turkey at Fort Bowie has courage matched only by the soldiers who served here! Is he guarding history, singing for his fallen friends, pondering holiday mischief, or gobbling at the cannon?

What do you think—is he foolhardy, festive, or the bravest bird of all? Wishing you a holiday full of joy!

Watch where you step!!

That “pebble” you’re about to walk on might just be Arizona’s master of disguise, the Round-Tailed Horned Lizard!

These tiny tricksters are just 1.5 to 2.75 inches long and our living proof of nature’s camouflage game is STRONG. With their ash white or reddish coloring and toad-like bodies, they blend seamlessly into the rocky soils of southeastern Arizona.

So the next time you’re hiking the trails around Fort Bowie, slow down and appreciate the incredible wildlife hiding in plain sight. You might be stepping over a perfectly camouflage neighbor.

The Visitor Center at Fort Bowie National Historic Site will be closed Monday, July 7th. The visitor center is open until 4 pm Sundays and Mondays for the summer.

You can hike the 1.5 mile trail to the visitor center and ruins, stamp your passport on the porch, and use the restrooms at the back of the visitor center from dawn until dusk every day of the week.

Remember summer is monsoon season: the weather can be extremely unpredictable. Watch the horizon for dark clouds. Take cover if you hear thunder or see lightning. Heavy downpours can make local roads treacherous.

What a remarkable difference a single day can make! Today, a light dusting of snow and cloud cover shroud the fort ruins - Helen's Dome and Bowie Peak are barely visible standing sentinel over the ruins of the second Fort Bowie.
