Arizona's new law is affecting volunteer fire departments, with insurance premiums skyrocketing from $4,800 to $37,000 per volunteer annually. Local fire chiefs are worried about the impact on resources and public safety.

Howdy Bowie,
We just want to give you an ya'll and update for the last 30 days.
First, in order for a more transpareny for the District, we started a new ADA compliant website at www.bowiefiredistrict.com. Over the last 30 days we have organized, scanned and uploaded almost 2 1/2 years of financial documents, 3 years of board meetings and minutes, continued inventory of the Fire district assets we were unable to complete on the initial go, including items found between the connex and newly designated crew quarters.
We completely stripped the 1989 Ford that had been listed for sale for the last year and was just auctioned off on publicsurplus.com for $3,700. We completed the NFPA inspections of our fleet. Some deficiencies noted was a leaking brake line on the 2007 Ford rescue prior to this, we had to pull apart the pump housing as the bolt had backed out preventing the pump from spinning.
We had a missing Clevis pin on the slack adjuster on the engine (It only had 3 working brakes instead of 4).
We purchased and installed new fittings on the new water tender so that it can actually fill the engines on scene (There was only a working 1" booster line and spray bars before the install).
The little water tender is currently out of service with an apparent front main seal leak and transmission leak.

We have had a total of 13 calls, and except for the first call, we had 2 personnel of either a combination of volunteers and myself, or 2 volunteers. We did have to turn down responding outside of our district 3 times as that would have left no coverage inside the District. One of the calls we turned down outside of the district, we did have an EMS call inside 30 the District about 30mins after the working mva dispatch, where myself and one volunteer responded.
The calls for the last 30 days included 5 motor vehicle accidents all were outside the district(3 were turn down as we would not have had adequate coverage inside the district and 1 was cancelled) 1 tractor trailer fire mutual aid with San Simon, 4 EMS calls (2 were cancellations), 2 brush fire calls that were the same permitted burn and 1 Fire alarm at the Elementary school. They were doing a practice run, and the alarm sent a signal to dispatch.
We cannot give enough thanks to the volunteers for the department. There has been almost continuous coverage for the last month and we will continue to do so. In addition to the two volunteers that have stayed on, we now have an additional 6 volunteers with varing degrees of experience including basic wildcard, firefighter 1 and 2 and EMT. We are always grateful when an individual wants to come and volunteer. Some come to volunteer as far away as Phoenix. So please give them some thanks.

We are alway looking for more volunteers for the administration or fire or medical volunteers to respond to calls.
We have one volunteer coming aboard assist in the office this coming week.
As far as the interim chief's schedule, though the chief is typically there Thursday through Sunday, the chief has the ability to flex the hours. For example the chief was here from last wednesday October 8th, through the weekend of the rain event and left on October 17th at 330 in the afternoon. He did have to travel to Tucson to get part for the rescue for the pump to function and a few trips to Willcox, but there was typically another volunteer at the station when that occurred.

Events coming up include a Board Meeting on Monday October 20th at 6pm to select a new board member. We are planning an additional meeting the following week to swear the new board member in and continue the work of the Fire District.

STAY TUNED!!!!

LUZENA ROAD AT MP6 IS BACK OPEN. DRIVE SAFE

10/16/2025

Hello Bowie Residents,
Please be aware you can request public records on our bowiefiredistrict.com website under the contact us icon. Please understand, we are not the State of Arizona, as such we have a very small staff of one full time person and 8 volunteers that assist in running calls and operating a fire district. Though it is not required, we are working as fast as we can to scan documents and get them uploaded for transparency. Continue to visit the web page. We are currently working from 2023 forward. We have uploaded warrants and invoices from July 2023-December 2023 located under the warrants tab. This also includes the payroll account and deposits made. This all takes time and is very time consuming.
Thank you for your patience.

I am sure you have heard, there are new Bowie Fire District Volunteers. Most of the volunteers attended the East Valley Insititute of Technology (EVIT) Fire program last year in Mesa Arizona. This is a high school program that teaches the concepts of Fire. These young 18-21 year old men and women have chosen Bowie as a place to grow an learn. They are not receiving any compensation. So when they are down, say hello. Thank them for wanting to drive three hours each way to help the community. Here they are learning how to load and pull a triple load. They are learning how to become well trained public servants and a positive influence in the community
