Council met last night to further allocate American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money. I made the first motion which was to allocate monies to go to those most affected by COVID. Specifically, my motion was: $50,000 to Brown Bag Food Project, $50,000 to BG Christian Food Pantry, $50,000 to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), $50,000 to Habitat for Humanity, $100,000 to La Conexion, and $100,000 The Cocoon. Council Members were uncomfortable with writing checks directly to the non-profit organizations. They did want to allocate $500,000 to assist non-profit organizations, but to have city's grants department determine non-profit organizations and amounts with direction from a Council Committee. So, I'm pleased to state that our first allocation of the night was for half a million dollars to non-profit organizations (through the grants dept.) to assist them in ministering to those in need (e.g., food insecurity).
