🌞 Sun Safety Vibes Only! 🌞

The UV Index is climbing this week, with very high levels expected Tuesday through Thursday (UV 9) and again Monday (UV 8). At these levels, unprotected skin can begin to burn in as little as 20 minutes.

Before heading outside:

🧴 Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
🕶️ Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat
👕 Cover up with lightweight clothing when possible
🌳 Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
💧 Stay hydrated while enjoying the sunshine

Whether you're at the ball field, the park, a community event, or just enjoying time in your backyard, a few simple steps can help protect your skin today and reduce your risk of skin cancer in the future.

A huge shoutout to Meteorologist Chris Vickers and his UV forecast!
This week's UV forecast reminds us that sun safety isn't just for vacation at the beach—it's important anytime you're outdoors.

In honor of Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, we’d like to formally ask Ohio pollen to calm down. 🌼🤧

If seasonal allergies or asthma affect you or your family:
✔ Check pollen and air quality forecasts
✔ Limit outdoor activity during peak pollen times if symptoms are severe
✔ Keep rescue inhalers accessible
✔ Talk with your healthcare provider if symptoms worsen

And remember: persistent coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or trouble breathing should never be ignored.

Heads up from our friends at Wood County Park District!

Heads up from our friends at Wood County Park District!

We are very close to the start of work to resurface the Slippery Elm Trail!🚲

The contractor, Gerken Paving, anticipates that paving will begin during the first week of June.

🚧In advance of that, the center bollards at each section will be removed and the pavement where the trail meets each road will be milled to accommodate the new pavement. Trail users should exercise more caution than usual at each intersection.🚧

Throughout the project, the trail will remain open except for the sections that are under active construction each day. Closure signs will be posted and large construction vehicles will be present. Please do not attempt to access the trail sections that are under active construction. After paving is complete, work will be performed to add soil and grass seed to the pavement edge. The anticipated project completion date is August 28, 2026.

Additional updates for this project will be provided in the next couple weeks.

We went from spring jackets to summer heat almost overnight. 😱

When temperatures jump quickly like this, our bodies need time to adjust — especially early in the season when we aren’t used to the heat yet. Even temperatures in the 80s can increase the risk of heat exhaustion during the first big warm-up of the year.

A few reminders as we make the sudden switch from spring to summer-like weather:

💧 Drink extra water throughout the day
🧢 Dress in lightweight clothing if you’ll be outside
🌤️ Take breaks in the shade, even during yard work or outdoor activities
🐾 Make sure pets have access to water and cooler spaces
👵 Check in on older adults, neighbors, and anyone sensitive to heat
🚗 Remember: cars heat up fast, even on mild spring days

The first hot days of the year can catch people off guard because our routines — and our bodies — haven’t fully adjusted yet.

Take it slow, stay cool, and enjoy the sunshine safely.
