Leadership Knows No Boundaries

Leadership knows no boundaries and sometimes the best examples of leadership are found outside the traditional workplace or classroom.

Andrew Miller is one of our Brownwater Expeditions river guides and healthcare instructors, but his commitment to service, leadership and developing others extends well beyond Brownwater.

Andrew serves with the Civil Air Patrol as the Tennessee Wings Deputy Director of Emergency Services (Ground) and as the Deputy Commander for Cadets with the Music City Composite Squadron in Nashville, Tennessee. He has also earned the Expert Ranger proficiency grade and serves on staff at Hawk Mountain Ranger School where he continues to develop and share his expertise in outdoor leadership and skills.

His commitment to youth development extends to Scouting America, where he serves as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 9 and as a Merit Badge Counselor for the Bledsoe Creek District.

Recently, Andrew represented Brownwater Expeditions while working with Troop 1058 from Joelton, Tennessee, assisting Scouts as they worked toward earning their merit badges.

This is the kind of leadership and service we value at Brownwater Expeditions. Andrew doesn't simply teach skills: he uses his knowledge and experience to develop others, prepare people to serve and help young people discover what they are capable of accomplishing.

Whether he's on the river, teaching lifesaving skills, serving with the Civil Air Patrol or mentoring young people through Scouting, Andrew consistently uses his knowledge and experience to help others grow.

We're proud to have Andrew as part of the Brownwater Expeditions team and grateful for the experience, knowledge and passion he continues to share with our youth and communities.

Leadership knows no boundaries, service has no limits and the skills we share today can help build the leaders of tomorrow.

19 MORE PEOPLE READY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Brownwater Expeditions recently had the privilege of conducting a CPR & AED training in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, with participants from Hardin and Breckinridge Counties.

Together, 19 more people are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to recognize a cardiac emergency, begin CPR and use an AED when seconds matter.

A special thank you to Civil Air Patrol’s Heartland Composite Squadron and their Unit Commander, Capt. Eric Threadgill, for hosting this training and helping make it possible. Participants were primarily CAP members, but we were also pleased to have a strong presence of community members who chose to take the time to become better prepared to help others.

You never know when a family member, friend, coworker, teammate or even a complete stranger may need someone willing to step forward and take action.

Training creates confidence, confidence creates action and action can save a life.

Brownwater Expeditions is proud to partner with organizations and communities across Kentucky to provide practical training that helps people to be ready, be prepared and make tomorrows differences today.

Thank you to all 19 participants for making the commitment to be prepared!

Due to lower-than-anticipated enrollment, Brownwater Expeditions has made the difficult decision to cancel our August 21–23 Adventure Camp. While we are disappointed that we won't be able to host the full weekend experience this season, we remain committed to getting people outdoors and on the water.

Instead, we're excited to offer two guided paddling adventures on the beautiful Barren River on Saturday, August 22.

Morning Paddle
7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
State Street Bridge to Boat Landing Road Park
Approximately 6.2 river miles
$35 per participant

Afternoon Paddle
12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Boat Landing Road Park to H.P. Thomas Landing (Lonnie White Ramp)
Approximately 8.0 river miles
$35 per participant

Looking for an even bigger adventure? Register for both trips and paddle the entire 14.2-mile route for a discounted price of $60.

Each trip is limited to 18 participants, ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and personalized experience led by the Brownwater Expeditions team.

If you were registered for the Adventure Camp, your registration fee will be refunded in full. We'd love to have you join us on one or both paddling trips instead.

Whether you're an experienced paddler or simply looking for a relaxing day on the river, this is a great opportunity to experience one of South Central Kentucky's most scenic waterways while making lasting memories with family and friends.

To reserve your spot or request additional information, send us a message through our page or email us directly at [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support of Brownwater Expeditions. We look forward to seeing you on the river!

Our next Brownwater Expeditions Adventure Camp is right around the corner, taking place August 21–23, 2026 at the Eagle Ridge Retreat Center.

Open to ages 12 and up, this unique weekend experience combines outdoor adventure, hands-on training, leadership development and practical life skills. Unlike most camps that focus only on youth, we offer both youth and adult tracks, creating a family-friendly and community-centered environment.

Participants can choose from three tracks:
• Traditional Camp Experience – a well-rounded outdoor getaway
• Standard First Aid (SFA) – learn essential lifesaving skills
• Wilderness First Aid (WFA) – advanced emergency preparedness training

Youth participants will be fully immersed in the camp experience, building leadership, teamwork and confidence through shared challenges and structured activities.

Adults enrolled in SFA or WFA will train alongside youth, encouraging mentorship and shared learning. Outside of training, adults will participate in separate activities designed specifically for their experience level.

Throughout the weekend, attendees will hear from guest keynote speakers during meal periods, offering leadership insight and real-world experience from a variety of professional backgrounds.

Activities will include:
• Exploring scenic nature trails
• Paddling on the Barren River
• Camp-style activities and team-building experiences
• Practical leadership lessons integrated throughout the weekend

Whether you are looking to gain new skills, grow as a leader, or spend meaningful time outdoors, this camp offers a complete experience.

Last Monday, June 1st, 2026, Brownwater Expeditions instructor Mark Riley led a CPR & AED course in Somerset, KY, where 14 students took the initiative to learn lifesaving skills that can make a difference when seconds count.

At Brownwater Expeditions, we believe adventure and preparedness go hand in hand. Training like this strengthens our communities by preparing everyday people to respond during emergencies. From recognizing cardiac emergencies to providing quality CPR and properly using an AED, these students walked away with the confidence and skills needed to step forward and help others.

A huge thank you to Mark Riley for providing outstanding instruction and congratulations to all 14 students for completing their CPR & AED training!

Adventure builds confidence. Training builds readiness. Together, we build safer communities.

What an incredible start to the 2026 Brownwater Expeditions Adventure Camp season!

This weekend, campers traveled from Evansville, Indiana and Morgantown, Auburn, Bowling Green and Danville, Kentucky to challenge themselves, build new friendships and develop skills that will last a lifetime.

Over the course of the weekend, each camper successfully paddled 8.2 miles on the beautiful Barren River, demonstrating perseverance, teamwork and confidence on the water. Campers also earned certification in Stop the Bleed, gaining lifesaving skills that could one day help save a life.

Our adventures continued on the trails of Lost River Cave, where campers used practical land navigation skills including pace count, shooting an azimuth and navigating from point to point using a compass. These hands-on experiences challenged campers to think critically, work together and trust their training.

As the sun set Saturday evening, campers gathered around the campfire to enjoy s'mores, fellowship and devotional time. Through discussions on holistic leadership principles, they explored what it means to lead with character, integrity, service and resilience. Throughout every activity, campers practiced Leave No Trace ethics, learning how to responsibly enjoy and protect the outdoors for future generations.

At Brownwater Expeditions, our goal is more than outdoor recreation… we strive to develop confident leaders, capable teammates and responsible stewards of the outdoors. This weekend's campers rose to every challenge and represented their communities exceptionally well.

Thank you to our campers, families, volunteers and staff who made this unforgettable adventure possible. We can't wait to see what the rest of the season brings!
