🚨 ROLE PLAYERS NEEDED – REGIONAL SPRING SCHOOL 🚨

Caroline County Fire-Rescue is seeking volunteers to serve as role players for an upcoming Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) class during our Regional Spring School.

Volunteers will portray simulated victims in a mass casualty scenario, helping our students train in life-saving skills under realistic conditions. Role players will have moulage makeup applied to simulate injuries, adding realism to the training experience.

No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to participate and help our responders train to better serve the community.

As a thank-you for your time, lunch will be provided to all volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please email Captain Kelly Barill at [email protected].

Your participation helps ensure our first responders are prepared when real emergencies happen. Thank you for supporting training and public safety!

Dress for the Weather — Stay Warm & Stay Safe

Cold weather can affect your body quickly if you’re not dressed properly. Wearing the right clothing helps retain body heat and reduces the risk of cold-related injuries.

Cold Weather Clothing Tips:
✔️ Layer up — adjust layers based on how cold it is
✔️ Protect exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face coverings
✔️ Wear waterproof boots and outer layers to block wind, rain, and snow
✔️ Choose insulating materials in colder and extreme cold conditions

From chilly days to extreme cold, dressing appropriately can make all the difference.

Plan ahead. Layer smart. Stay warm.

Shovel Smart — Protect Your Heart

Snow removal is hard work and can put extra strain on your heart, especially in cold weather. Taking a few simple precautions can help you stay safe while clearing snow.

🧤 Snow Shoveling Safety Tips:
✔️ Warm up and stretch before heading outside
✔️ Take it slow — pace yourself and take breaks every 10–15 minutes
✔️ Push, don’t lift snow whenever possible
✔️ Dress warmly to protect your body from the cold
✔️ Use the right tools — lightweight, ergonomic shovels reduce strain

If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or extreme fatigue, stop immediately and call 911.

Shoveling snow is hard work — listen to your body and stay safe.

Space Heater Safety Matters

As temperatures drop, space heaters can help keep you warm — but they can also be a serious fire risk if used improperly. Follow these important safety tips to protect your home and family:

🏠 Space Heater Safety Tips:
✔️ Keep heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable
✔️ Never leave a space heater unattended or on while sleeping
✔️ Place heaters on a flat, stable surface to prevent tipping
✔️ Plug directly into a wall outlet — never use extension cords
✔️ Never use an oven or stove to heat your home

❄️ A few simple precautions can prevent fires and keep everyone safe this winter.

Stay warm. Stay alert. Stay safe.

Are You Ready for an Ice Storm?

Ice storms can cause power outages, falling trees, and hazardous conditions around your home. Taking a few preventative steps now can help reduce damage and keep your family safe.

🏠 Ice Storm Preparedness Tips:
✔️ Trim weak or damaged tree branches near your home
✔️ Avoid leaving vehicle wipers raised — they can freeze and break
✔️ Have at least a week’s worth of food and prescription medications
✔️ Do not park vehicles under trees
✔️ Keep phones and essential devices fully charged

❄️ When ice is expected, stay home if possible and limit travel to emergencies only.

Prepare ahead. Stay alert. Stay safe.

01/23/2026

Power outages are certain for some, especially in areas where the heaviest ice will accumulate on trees and powerlines.

The cold can be deadly--but even without power, there are still ways to warm things up. Closing blinds and curtains and closing room doors can help contain heat, and stuffing towels in the cracks under doors can help keep the warmth in. Don’t forget about eating and staying hydrated - food provides energy to warm the body.

Winter Weather Alert — Stay Home If You Can

With winter weather approaching, the safest choice is to stay off the roads, if at all possible. Hazardous conditions can develop quickly and make travel dangerous.

If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is prepared with a winter emergency supply kit, including:
✔️ Cell phone charger
✔️ First aid kit
✔️ Jumper cables
✔️ Water & snacks
✔️ Warm clothing and blankets
✔️ Flashlight
✔️ Snow shovel & brush
✔️ Flares or reflective devices
✔️ Sand or kitty litter for traction
✔️ Tow rope
✔️ A full tank of gas

Planning ahead can prevent a bad situation from becoming a dangerous one.

Stay home when you can. Prepare when you must travel. Stay safe.

An area Boy Scout has approached Caroline County Fire Rescue with an offer to create two-dimensional training mannequins for the agency. These life size mannequins are used for Search and Rescue training by our County Drone Team. The mannequins utilize special passive thermal film coverings that simulate the heat signatures given off from a human body. This is especially helpful with night time search training.
Although not an official fire and rescue function, we hope you will consider supporting this scout’s fundraiser for his Eagle Scout project. He is raising funds through a take-out spaghetti dinner to be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at the Ladysmith Volunteer Rescue Squad station. Details and ticket information are included on the attached flyer.
