BOXFORD DEMS CAUCUS
Expect a full caucus based on our neighboring towns’ caucuses! The Middleton Dems had a really impressive turnout at their caucus as their chair, Kyle Smith, provided smooth but firm guidance through the complicated caucus rules.
People are fired up!
We’re holding our caucus on Thursday (March 5) at The Center at 10 Elm. Registration starts at 6:30 and the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The doors will close at 7:15 p.m. for voting on delegates. If you want to stand for election, let us know at the meeting.
PURPOSE
The purpose of the caucus is to elect Boxford’s 5 delegates (and 4 alternates) to send to the Massachusetts Democratic Party’s Nominating Convention in Worcester (May 29-30). Candidates for state-wide offices will be vying to get 15% of the delegate vote at the Nominating Convention.
CAUCUS REQUIREMENTS
The caucus is open to the general public, but you must meet the following requirements to be able to vote for delegates or be elected a delegate yourself. You must
- be a registered Democrat at the time of the caucus;
- be 16 years of age at the day of the caucus;
- be a resident of Boxford; and
- be physically present at the caucus.
You can download more details (PDF) about the caucus process from the Massachusetts Democratic Party website.
DELEGATE BENEFITS
You might be asking yourself: Why on earth would I want to be elected delegate?
Here’re 17 reasons (in no particular order and off the top of my head). You get to
1. Sit in the incredibly cool kids’ section (with our neighboring Northshore towns): It’s a great opportunity to meet and chat with some familiar faces. (Rumor has it that our friend, former chair, Marianne Rutter will be there but as a delegate from Amesbury.)
2. Vote on candidates’ ballot access: You will help decide which candidates will receive support and appear on the Democratic primary ballot in Massachusetts.
3. Have direct influence on party decisions: Delegates vote on key rules and internal party decisions that shape how the party operates.
4. If so inclined, network with party leaders: You get to meet elected officials, activists, and organizers from across the state.
5. Access candidates directly: Delegates will often have the opportunity to meet statewide and local candidates.
6. Build political relationships: Form long-lasting connections with people active in Massachusetts politics.
7. Enhance your civic résumé: Serving as a delegate is an experience you can highlight for future campaigns or public service roles if you’re ever considering running for office.
8. Opportunity to represent your community: Delegates bring local concerns to the statewide party platform and conversations.
9. Attend speeches and keynote events: Conventions typically feature speeches from party leaders and featured guests.
10. Learn more about the political process: Being a delegate offers a close-up look at party governance.
11. Contribute to party unity and strategy: Delegates help rally support and build consensus heading into primaries and general elections.
12. If you’re into swag, swag away Conventions are swag central. You’ll never have to buy another pen, a cord for a convention badge, or tote bag.
13. Engage with diverse perspectives: Conventions bring together Democrats from all regions and backgrounds.
14. Potential to lobby for issues you care about: You can organize or advocate within the convention for specific policies.
15. Shape future campaigns: Your involvement can influence party strategy and candidate support heading into elections.
16. Personal fulfillment of civic participation: Delegates often speak of the satisfaction of being directly involved in democratic processes.
17. Meet representatives for the various candidates who will be present to have you sign their nomination papers.
We’ve included a small caucus section on our webpage 2026 Elections.
NOMINATION PAPERS
Many of the candidates running for office will have representatives at our caucus to collect signatures on their behalf. We will have a separate nomination paper table.
FOOD DRIVE
We will be collecting food donations for Neighbors in Need (NIN) at the caucus. NIN prioritizes nutritious foods and works hard to ensure that the food they distribute forms part of a balanced meal and helps improve the health of the families they serve. Last year NIN distributed more than 1 million pounds of donated food.
