It is with deep sadness that DOCR mourns the loss of Corporal Harry Dunton, a U.S. Navy veteran, Mason, man of faith, and devoted public servant. A 2025 Bronze Valor Award recipient, Cpl. Dunton exemplified what it means to show up for others, both on and off the job. He will be remembered for his strength, his humor, and his selfless heart.

A funeral service will be held Friday, May 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Garrett Park, MD.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hero Dogs, hero-dogs.org.

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee.” — Isaiah 41:10

Rest easy, Corporal Dunton. 🙏

Happy Mother’s Day from DOCR 💐

Today, we celebrate every mother in our community, especially the moms on shift right now, and the incredible women standing beside those who serve.

Motherhood and public service have a lot in common, both ask you to give, often quietly, and often without recognition.

To every mother, wife, and woman who has shown up for someone like a mom — thank you. You make a difference in this department and in this community every single day. 💙

This , we're spotlighting our Community Corrections Division: the teams working every day to make sure people don't just leave our facilities, but leave prepared.

Pre-Trial Services (PTS) works with newly arrested individuals to assess safe release into the community while they await trial, offering supervision, alternative community service, and substance abuse intervention so that a pending charge doesn't have to mean automatic detention.

Pre-Release and Reentry Services (PRRS) takes it a step further by providing community-based residential and non-residential programs where individuals engage in work, treatment, education, and family involvement before their release. The goal? Equipping people with the skills, direction, support, and savings to lead productive, law-abiding lives.

Because public safety isn't just about who's inside. It's about what happens when they come home.

This , we want you to meet the programs and services working every day to support the people in our care, because what happens inside our walls matters long after someone walks out. At DOCR, Inmate Services goes far beyond basic needs. Here’s just a glimpse:

🍰 Sweet Release Bakery Program: An 8-week culinary training program where incarcerated individuals earn ServSafe Food Handler and Manager certifications and gain real, marketable skills for the food service industry upon release.

🤝 Volunteers & Religious Services: 180+ volunteers show up consistently, some for over 30 years, to lead recovery support, religious programming, reentry services, and enrichment activities. Their dedication is a cornerstone of our rehabilitative mission.

🪪 Community Reentry Identification Card: One card. Three resources. Our Community Reentry ID serves as an official government ID, a Ride On bus pass, and a Montgomery County Public Library card, giving returning individuals a running start from day one.

📚 Montgomery County Public Libraries: The MCCF Library is a full branch of the MCPL system, offering a rotating collection of approximately 8,000 books in English, Spanish, and other languages. For individuals who can’t visit in person, books are delivered. Because literacy is part of rehabilitation too.

📚 Children & Families: Through our Reentry Storybook Initiative, incarcerated parents record themselves reading books that are mailed home to their children. Because a parent’s voice matters, even across distance.

💼 WorkSource Montgomery — Montgomery County, MD Government was one of the first in the nation to operate an American Job Center inside a correctional facility. Individuals build resumes, prepare for interviews, and connect to employment both during and after incarceration.

And yes, wraparound support through education (Montgomery County Public Schools + Montgomery College), mental health services and our DOCR-Montgomery County Health and Human Services - MD MAT Program means individuals aren’t navigating any of this alone.

This is Inmate Services. This is DOCR. This is rehabilitation in action. 🔑

During National Small Business Week, and in the spirit of Corrections Week, Montgomery County, MD Government recognized local businesses that are doing more than running great operations, they're investing in people.

Montgomery County, MD - Executive Marc Elrich visited businesses making a real difference in our community's economic and social fabric. Among them, several have opened their doors to individuals navigating the path back after incarceration, offering opportunity where it matters most.

DOCR is proud to partner with the Montgomery County Business Center, the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, and Pike District Partnership to connect people with employers who believe in second chances, and in the strength of an inclusive workforce.

To every business that showed up for our community: thank you.

🛡️It’s National Correctional Officers & Employees Week, of course we have to highlight our Correctional Officers. When the week was first established by President Reagan, it was created specifically to honor correctional officers, and that recognition remains just as meaningful today.

At DOCR, officers serve in a wide range of assignments: housing units, intake, transport, reentry, Central Control, facilities and maintenance, laundry, fire and rescue, recruitment, and as Correctional Dietary Officers. Specialized teams include the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Honor Guard, and Security Threat Group Intelligence Unit.

Regardless of your assignment, every officer plays a critical role in keeping our facilities safe and supporting rehabilitation. Thank you to all DOCR Correctional Officers for your dedication, professionalism, and service.

Along with National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and today we’re highlighting the mental and behavioral health teams.

DOCR staff provide crisis intervention, suicide‑risk screening, therapy, psychiatric care, and specialized programs like MCCF’s DBT program. Units such as the Crisis Intervention Unit and Step‑Down Pod offer intensive support for individuals with the highest needs.

Through our partnership with Montgomery County Health and Human Services - MD (DHHS) including CATS, JAS, Jail‑Based MAT, and Narcan access, individuals receive treatment, education, and reentry support that continues into the community.

Mental health matters. And inside DOCR, support begins the moment someone enters our care.

⚕ Nurses Week (May 6–12) begins today! We’re shining a light on the incredible nurses at DOCR who provide around‑the‑clock care every single day.

DOCR nurses complete medical screenings, TB and HIV testing, chronic care support, IV therapy, x‑rays, dental coordination, and so much more, all while ensuring our facilities meet the highest correctional health standards.

Their dedication keeps people safe, healthy, and supported from intake to reentry. Thank you to our exceptional nurses!

⭐ Teacher Appreciation Week also means celebrating the instructors inside DOCR who train, guide, and prepare our staff for the work that keeps our community safe, both inside and out.

Our in‑house educators are the people behind the skills, knowledge, and confidence our staff bring to every post and every shift. They don’t just teach new employees, they teach all of us, year after year. Because in corrections, learning never stops. Annual refreshers, updated standards, and evolving best practices keep everyone prepared for the realities of the work.

From our new, corrections‑specific Crisis Intervention Training (taught by our Supervisory Therapist) to launching a state‑accredited DOCR Training Academy, our instructors are shaping how we serve the community and how we support one another. Their programs are built on real‑world scenarios, staff feedback, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

⭐ It’s Teacher Appreciation Week with today being Teacher Appreciation Day; and at DOCR, that means shining a light on the educators who make up a vital part of who we are.

At the Model Learning Center (MLC) at MCCF, teachers from Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College help individuals earn high school diplomas and GEDs, build workplace skills, and prepare for college.

Three times a year, they even guide students through the Montgomery College admissions process, creating real opportunities for life after incarceration. And each spring, the MLC Graduation Ceremony reminds us what their work is really about: second chances, new beginnings, and the power of education to change lives.
