The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office joins law enforcement agencies across Virginia in mourning the passing of Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper.

Sheriff Draper was someone we had a tremendous amount of respect for, not only as a fellow Sheriff and law enforcement colleague, but even more so as a friend. His dedication to his community, his profession, and the people he served will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sheriff Draper’s family, friends, the men and women of the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office, and all those whose lives he touched during this difficult time.

We are grateful for his friendship and his many years of dedicated service to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Rest easy, Sheriff Draper. Your friendship, leadership, and service will always be remembered. 💙

MECKLENBURG COUNTY DEPUTIES RECOGNIZED WITH AWARD OF APPRECIATION

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is proud to recognize Deputies Towery, Carroll, Hatcher, and Aston, who were recently presented with an Award of Appreciation by the Virginia Department of Corrections for their actions during a critical incident at Baskerville Correctional Center.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of Baskerville Correctional Center and involved an armed individual experiencing a mental health crisis and making threats of self-harm. Through calm communication, teamwork, and professionalism, the deputies worked to de-escalate a highly volatile situation. When it became necessary to act, they did so in a controlled and measured manner, safely taking the individual into custody without injury to the individual, deputies, or the public.

Their actions reflect the highest standards of law enforcement and demonstrate the importance of training, restraint, teamwork, and compassion when responding to individuals in crisis.

We would also like to extend our sincere thank you to the Virginia Department of Corrections and Baskerville Correctional Center for recognizing our deputies with this Award of Appreciation. We greatly appreciate the strong working relationship between our agencies and the continued cooperation and partnership in serving and protecting our community.

🚨 SCAM & LAND FRAUD ALERT 🚨

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office continues to receive reports of land fraud and other scams targeting our citizens.

Land fraud can occur when criminals use forged documents, stolen identities, or fraudulent real estate transactions to attempt to sell or transfer property they do not own. We are also continuing to see a variety of scams involving phone calls, text messages, emails, online marketplaces, and requests for money or personal information.

Protect yourself:

Be cautious of unsolicited calls, texts, emails, or messages.
Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or banking information to someone you do not know and trust.
Verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent a business, government agency, law enforcement agency, or financial institution.
Property owners should regularly monitor their property records and be alert for suspicious activity involving their land.
If something doesn't seem right, stop and verify before acting.

🚨 SLOW DOWN ON DIRT & GRAVEL ROADS! 🚨

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office reminds motorists that speeding on rural dirt and gravel roads can be dangerous. Loose surfaces, curves, limited visibility, pedestrians, wildlife, farm equipment, and vehicles entering driveways can create unexpected hazards.

⚠️ Know the law:
Under Va. Code § 46.2-873.1, the maximum speed limit on a nonsurface-treated highway, including dirt and gravel roads, is 35 MPH unless otherwise posted.

Excessive speed can also result in reckless driving charges under Virginia law, including Va. Code §§ 46.2-852 and 46.2-862.

👮 Please slow down, stay alert, and drive according to road and weather conditions.

35 MPH is a maximum—not a target.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office extends our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the family, loved ones, friends, fellow deputies, Sheriff Richardson, and the entire Sheriff's Office following the tragic line-of-duty death of Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III.

Deputy Duvall made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community. His courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting others reflect the very best of the law enforcement profession. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, we stand united with our brothers and sisters in law enforcement as we mourn the loss of one of our own. We pray for strength, comfort, and peace for all those whose lives have been forever changed by this tragedy.

🚔 SCHOOL STARTS MONDAY – DRIVE SAFELY! 🚌

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office reminds everyone that students will be returning to school Monday, and we need your help to keep them safe.

🔸 School Buses: When a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, all traffic in both directions must stop. The only exception is for vehicles traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway separated by a physical barrier or unpaved median.

🔸 Highway 58 & Wooden Bridge Road: Expect heavy traffic during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal around the Mecklenburg High School, Middle School complex. Please allow extra travel time, obey all traffic signals, avoid blocking intersections, and be patient with other motorists.

🔸 School Zones Countywide: Traffic will increase around all elementary schools throughout Mecklenburg County during drop-off and pick-up times. Slow down, stay alert, watch for children, and school staff directing traffic, and eliminate distractions while driving.

🚔 Beginning Monday, deputies will be conducting increased patrols throughout Mecklenburg County with a focus on school zones, school bus safety, speeding, distracted driving, and other traffic violations to help ensure a safe start to the school year.

A few extra minutes of patience can save a life. Let's work together to make this a safe and successful school year for every student, parent, bus driver, and member of our community.

🚸 SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY 🚸
Slow Down. Stay Alert. Save Lives.

As another school year begins on Monday, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office is reminding motorists that our children's safety depends on your driving.

School zones are some of the busiest areas on our roadways. Buses are loading and unloading students, parents are dropping off children, and traffic is heavier during arrival and dismissal times.

Drivers, Please Remember:

🚗 Obey all posted school zone speed limits when they are in effect.

📵 Put your phone away. Distracted driving can have devastating consequences.

🚌 Watch for school buses loading and unloading students.

🚫 Never block intersections, school entrances, or bus loading areas.

⏱️ Allow extra travel time and be patient during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.

⚠️ Expect sudden stops and increased traffic around schools.

Know the Law

Virginia Code § 46.2-873 establishes school zone speed limits and provides that drivers exceeding the posted school zone speed limit while the school zone is in operation are guilty of a traffic infraction.

Penalties may include:
💲 Up to a $250 fine for speeding in a school zone, in addition to court costs and other penalties provided by law.

⚖️ Drivers traveling 20 MPH or more over the posted speed limit, or over 85 MPH regardless of the speed limit, may also be charged with Reckless Driving, a Class 1 misdemeanor in Virginia.

Throughout the school year, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office deputies will conduct increased enforcement in and around school zones to help keep our students, teachers, school staff, and families safe.

Slow down. Obey the speed limit. Eliminate distractions. Together, we can make this a safe school year for everyone.
