Quick update on Full-day Kindergarten!

The motion passed 6-3 to authorize the Administration to proceed with planning and implementation steps necessary to establish a full-day kindergarten program, with the goal of launching the program beginning in the 2027–2028 school year.

Thanks to administration for their exhaustive research into the issue and to the Board members who supported all of our future BASD students.

Our community has an important decision ahead. At next Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting (3/24), a vote will take place on full-day Kindergarten. At the last meeting, discussion among board members stalled, and the Board President called for a vote—but it’s unclear if it will pass.

Full-day Kindergarten is more than just extended classroom time—it’s an investment in our community's future. We need your voice.

👉 Please take a moment to contact School Board members and urge them to vote YES for full-day Kindergarten. They all can be reached by emailing [email protected].

👉 Attend the meeting on Tuesday, March 24th if you can and show your support. Register to speak!

Every message, every voice, and every show of support matters.

Why Full-Day Kindergarten Matters:
✔️ Stronger academic foundation – More time for literacy, math, and critical thinking skills
✔️ Improved social and emotional development - Children have more opportunities to build relationships and confidence
✔️ Better preparedness for 1st grade and beyond - Students enter the next grade more ready to succeed
✔️ Equity for all students – Helps close learning gaps early, especially for working families and those needing additional support
✔️ More time for enriched learning – Includes play-based learning, creativity, and exploration—not just academics
✔️ Support for working families – Aligns better with the workday, reducing childcare burdens

This decision will shape the educational experience of our youngest learners for years to come. Let’s come together as a community and advocate for what’s best for our children

There were a few additional agenda items we wanted to touch on from last week's Committee of the Whole Meeting.

1 - Three Year Comprehensive Plan: The district presented a three‑year comprehensive plan due to the state by March 31 that prioritizes curriculum review (starting with ELA), structured literacy, and an MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) rollout with planned intervention teacher hires over three years to raise grades 3–8 proficiency toward a 65% target. The district’s current proficiency for grades 3–8 has hovered in the mid‑50s percentile range in recent years. The curriculum review process is resource‑intensive and ELA will be prioritized in the current cycle while math curriculum review is slated for a later year. If the board approves the comprehensive plan at the Feb. 25 meeting, the plan will be posted for a 30‑day public review before final state submission.

2 - GES Water System Proposal: The board approved the proposal from Suburban Water Technologies to install on‑site filtration at bottle fillers and selected fountains (installation estimated at roughly a week). A resin filtration system will be installed but requires DEP permitting that could take up to 4 to 6 months.

3 - BCIU Proposed Mandated Budget 2026-2027: Boyertown Area School District’s projected cost for next school year is $110,577.87. This amount represents a 3.00% increase over the 2025-2026 contribution.

At Tuesday's Committee of the Whole meeting, a feasibility study was presented to the Board that found strong survey support for all‑day kindergarten and outlined four implementation options. The surveys across parents, community members and staff were positive or neutral about full‑day kindergarten and that childcare cost savings and curricular alignment were top perceived benefits.

The four options for Full-Day Kindergarten that were proposed were:

1- Implement full-day K in all existing elementary schools and add 5 modular classrooms at BES. This would allow all students to stay at their home school and no relocation will need to take place. Likely cost $3.925M.

2 - Implement full-day K in all existing elementary schools with adjustments at BES. Possible options would be to move BES 5th grade to MSW (still part of elementary school/schedule) or cap the number of students at each grade at BES with additional students assigned to other elementary schools. Likely cost $1.665M.

3 - Make 2 elementary schools primary centers with grades Pre-K to 2nd. The remaining buildings would remain as elementaries. Aligns with existing east/west feed patterns and balances enrollment across 2 buildings. Likely cost $1.815M.

4 - Move 5th grade to Middle Schools and restructure buildings. MSE would hold grades 5-6. MSW would hold grades 7-8. Considerations would include significant increases to transportation cost and student time on buses. Likely cost $2.040M.

Each option carries tradeoffs for transportation, staffing and site work. After the presentation, an unofficial show of hands majority indicated to the administration that it should continue to examine the issues and pursue the goal. Administration asked the board to consider a March timeline to decide whether to proceed to planning for the 2027–28 school year and suggested authorizing professional services (architectural/engineering) to produce definitive feasibility and cost estimates.
