Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. 🇺🇸

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten. As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the day and remember those who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy.

This is such a great reminder since the weather is getting warmer!

As summer approaches, remember that the temperature inside a vehicle rises extremely quickly. Make sure you check your back seat when exiting your car for children, and also be mindful of our senior citizens you may be transporting.

At 2109, crews from Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department and Boykins Fire-Rescue were dispatched to Cross Keys Rd near the intersection of Meherrin Rd for an overturned vehicle. Crews arrived on scene to find a vehicle overturned in a field with one occupant. The patient was ground transported to a local trauma center for further evaluation. Southampton County Sheriff's Office was on scene as well as Southampton Towing.

While on scene, Newsoms and Boykins crews were dispatched, along with Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad, to a medical call. Crews were able to respond to this second call for service with a volunteer staffed ambulance out of Boykins.

Thank you to everyone who responded and for protecting our part of the county.

This week, May 17–23, we proudly recognize and celebrate the dedicated EMTs, paramedics, and emergency personnel who answer the call every single day. EMS Week is a time to honor the compassion, courage, and commitment shown by those who work tirelessly to care for others during some of life’s most critical moments!

The 2026 EMS Week theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” highlights the powerful collaboration between first responders, hospitals, healthcare teams, and the communities we serve. Every successful outcome is made possible through teamwork, trust, and a shared commitment to helping others!

To all EMS professionals - thank you for your sacrifice, your resilience, and the countless lives you impact each day. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and our communities are stronger because of you!

***WORKING BRUSH FIRE***

At 1510 hours Boykins Fire and Rescue and Branchville Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to Meherrin Road in the area of the Boykins cemetery for a brush fire in the tree line with power lines down. Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department was requested to respond due to initial comments and the elevated temperature outside.

Units quickly responded and found a moderate sized brush fire spreading to the woods. Several broken power poles and downed electrical lines were also discovered. Units quickly extinguished the fire and secured the area while Dominion Energy was requested for the downed lines.

Units operated on scene for approximately 45 minutes and then turned operations over to Dominion!
