Sheriff Springer was recently visited by a group of university students from Europe, Latvia. They wanted us to help spread the word that as part of a summer exchange program, they will be visiting residences in Bozeman, Belgrade, and Gallatin Gateway selling educational books and apps for families with children from toddlers through young adults preparing for college. They have acquired all the necessary permits and are selling for a legitimate company. Lilija drives a white Toyota, Nellija and Kristine drive a white Kia.

This is their first time in Montana, so if you happen to see them in your neighborhood, please say hi!!

Recent reporting has led to multiple questions from members of the public and the media.

In a hearing in front of District Court Judge Rienne McElyea on May 28, 2026, the Gallatin County Commission agreed to hold a public hearing to determine whether it will formally consent to the County’s participation in the federal 287(g) program.

The legal dispute centers on a Memorandum of Agreement entered into in 2020 by then-Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Warrant Service Officer component of the 287(g) program.

That agreement authorized trained detention officers to serve ICE administrative warrants on individuals already in custody at the Gallatin County Detention Center.

The issue before Judge McElyea is whether the Gallatin County Commission was required to consent to the Memorandum of Agreement before the County could participate in the program.

As part of the proceedings, the Commission agreed to hold a hearing to consider whether it wishes to ratify and consent to the agreement. The Commission has now scheduled a public hearing for June 16, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

In 2021, the Montana Legislature enacted § 27-16-801, MCA, which requires detention facilities to maintain custody of an individual who is the subject of an immigration detainer request for up to 48 hours beyond the time the person would otherwise be released. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office continues to follow state statute in cooperation with ICE. That state law remains in effect regardless of the Commission's decision regarding the 287(g) agreement.

Due to this law, ICE adjusted their procedures, so the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office serves detainer requests and no longer is required to serve ICE administrative warrants under the 287(g) program since the spring of 2025. As a result, from an operational standpoint, a decision not to ratify the Agreement would not change current practices at the Detention Center.

The Gallatin County Commission welcomes public comment and encourages interested community members to attend the hearing on June 16 at 9:00 a.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MULTI AGENCY OPERATION RESULTS IN MULTIPLE SEARCH WARRANTS EXECUTED IN BOZEMAN AND THE GATEWAY AREA

In the early morning hours of Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Missouri River Drug Task Force, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Bozeman PD, MT DCI, and other local, state and federal agencies, assisted the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in a large-scale, multi-location operation targeting illegal drug trafficking activity in Gallatin County.

Search warrants were simultaneously executed at several locations throughout Gallatin County. This coordinated effort is the result of a long-term investigation into drug distribution networks operating within the region. Multiple individuals were arrested on federal criminal charges.

This operation reflects the strong partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies working together to disrupt the flow of dangerous drugs into our community and hold those responsible accountable. It is also a reflection of what can be accomplished when the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Law Enforcement pull in the same direction to make our communities safer.

As your Sheriff, I pledge my Office will continue to deliver on our primary mission of “keeping Gallatin County safe by enforcing the law and keeping the Peace”. I appreciate the exceptional professionalism displayed by our federal, state and local agencies. However, I also recognize there are some community members who are sensitive to our federal law enforcement partners. I want to thank those members for recognizing the importance of these missions and their cooperation by not interfering, disrupting, or obstructing this extensive and well-executed operation. This is also a result of solid relationships, communication, and transparency.

Operations like this don’t occur by federal agents flying into Bozeman and executing from there. It takes months of work by our local investigators, in cooperation with all our partners, and years of trust. The relationships we have formed and maintained are what makes these operations run safely while protecting our citizens. This is exactly what this community expects from its Sheriff’s Office, and we are proud to deliver on these expectations while protecting your quality of life.

This week, May 10th through May 16th is National Police Week with today the 15th being National Peace Officers Memorial Day where the nation observes law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. It’s a time to reflect, remember and honor our fallen. May 16th also marks 9 years since Broadwater County Deputy Sheriff Mason Moore was killed in the line of duty. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and loved ones on that day and always.

Today we fly our flag at half-staff to honor all of the six men who sacrificed their lives serving our local communities.
