Good morning:

Thank you all for the support and kind comments. I also wanted to post an update for everyone. On Monday, January 27, President Trump signed a memo that directed all federal agencies to temporarily suspend grants, loans, and assistance programs until those programs could be reviewed for compliance with recently issued Executive Orders. In short, federal agencies cannot pay out any money until they’ve passed the review. On January 28th, this memo was blocked by a federal judge, pausing the proposed freeze until February 3rd. The situation remains unclear as we navigate through unknown waters, but we will continue to deliver services and programs. In the meantime, thank you for your support. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more!

My name is Shannon Bondy and I am the Executive Director of the Bozeman Senior Center. I would like to address this miscommunication directly with complete transparency. I also want to make it very clear that the Bozeman Senior Center is NOT in debt and we have never stated that we might have to close our doors. The Senior Center did find out that we might have a significant cut in our Federal/State funds, which only supports the Gallatin County Nutrition Program. We did have to cut some employee hours to adjust to the budget cuts. The Bozeman Senior Center is the main satellite center for the nutrition program and we also administer Three Forks and West Yellowstone. Last fiscal year, 32,990 meals on wheels were delivered to those who were homebound in these 3 communities. 68% of our participants cannot afford to pay for meals. Our suggested donation is $5.00/person but the meal actually costs us $19.37 per plate. We receive a significant amount of grant funding under the Older Americans Act to support Meals-on-Wheels and Congregate meals in three sites. The grants we receive offset the cost per plate, but they do not fund the program alone. The $710,000 is not a shortfall that the Senior Center is in, but actually a rough estimate of what it costs us to continue providing meals-on-wheels to those who cannot afford to pay. I believe that this got misconstrued during the interview that was conducted a few months ago. We are continually doing fundraising campaigns and seeking out additional grants to sustain the program. The Bozeman Senior Center is actually a very financially viable organization. Our thrift store helps support Meals-on-wheels as well. I do want to make sure that the community has a clear and concise message that is truthful and transparent. The Bozeman Senior Center does rely on donations and local community support to help sustain the nutrition program. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all of those who have donated and continue to support this amazing organization. We could not continue to provide the services and programs that we administer without individual and community support. Please help us make sure that people understand that we are NOT and have NEVER intended to close our doors. We have administered this program since 1967. We will continue to provide meals-on-wheels in these three communities. Thank you to all of you who have reached out to help us with fundraising. We greatly appreciate the support and it will help us to continue serving meals-on-wheels. I have been administering Senior Centers in this area for 30 years and I have always been in awe of this community and the philanthropic support!!! Please help us to stop the misinformation.
