On Aug. 30, 2026, at approximately 2:08 a.m., the Bozeman Police Department responded to a 911 call of a rollover vehicle crash and stabbing near Savannah Street and Davis Lane. After crashing their vehicle, the driver, an adult man, fled the scene on foot and stabbed a bystander. The bystander had attempted to detain the subject and sustained several stab wounds. The bystander was treated for their injuries at Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital and is expected to survive their injuries.

With the assistance of the bystander and other witnesses, a description of the suspect was developed at the crash scene. Patrol officers and detectives extensively searched the surrounding area, but the suspect was not located. Several hours later, an on-duty Bozeman Police Sergeant found the suspect near the area of North 19th Avenue and Baxter Lane.

The suspect was taken into custody and faces charges of Assault with Weapon – felony, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs – 2nd Offense – misdemeanor, and Fail to Give Notice of Accident by Quickest Means/Apparent Damage Over $1000 – misdemeanor. The suspect is currently being held on a $250,000 bond after appearing in Gallatin County Justice Court.

“Thank you to the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, Montana State University Police Department, Bozeman Fire Department, and American Medical Response for their assistance during this investigation,” stated Bozeman Police Deputy Chief Joe Swanson.

Bozeman Police had a great time at Catapalooza, meeting students and welcoming everyone back to campus and the community. Events like this give our officers a chance to connect with students, answer questions and build relationships outside of an emergency.

This week, we had 1279 calls for service, 141 cases opened and 204 traffic stops. On August 21st, an officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on W Main St, a 25 MPH zone. Once the suspect was stopped, the officer observed an open alcoholic beverage behind the driver’s seat and the suspect admitted to consuming “three shots and a drink”. The Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were administered and the officer determined the suspect was too impaired to operate a vehicle. The suspect was transported to the GCDC, where they provided two breath samples that showed a BAC of .186, more than twice the legal limit. The suspect was charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and/or Drugs 1st Offense.

This week, we had 1235 calls for service, 137 cases opened and 172 traffic stops. On August 14th, an officer observed a driver on an electric motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed while performing a wheelie maneuver. Officers attempted to stop the suspect, but the suspect fled. The officers did not pursue the suspect, due to their excessive speed and the risk of public safety. Later that night, the officer saw the suspect again traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop. The officer activated the vehicle’s lights and sirens, but the suspect fled again, eluding the stop by traveling the wrong way down the sidewalk. A few minutes later, another officer successfully stopped and detained the suspect. The suspect was arrested for reckless driving and fleeing from a peace officer.

Last week, the Bozeman Police Department hosted Reach, Inc. for a tour! The group got a full look at the department, including the evidence processing room, interrogation rooms, a courtroom and a police vehicle. They learned more about how our department operates and got to meet some of the officers and staff who serve our community every day. We loved hosting the group and answering all their questions!

Reach Inc. is a local, private, non-profit organization that’s been providing services to adults with developmental disabilities since 1974.
