As we head into summer, here are the current rules about these e-things zipping around:
You have to be 16 to ride an e-bike.
If it has a seat and a battery or motor, it’s an e-bike, even if it looks like a scooter with a tiny bike seat on a pole. If it has a seat and a propulsion system other than your two feet and some gears, the minimum requirement is 16yo to ride.
If you are on something with wheels that goes forward and you are 12 or under you need a helmet on your head and strapped under your chin.
One rider per bike/scooter.
All riders need to obey traffic laws: stop signs, one way streets, stopping at alley intersections when riding along an alley even if there isn’t a stop sign there, yielding to right of way traffic, etc.
Vehicles can be confiscated. Parents can also be cited. Please talk to your kids and neighbors about safety and common sense. Police are prioritizing enforcement. No one wants this to be action after an incident.
I recognize that more significant local ordinances and enforcement action may be necessary, but my legal and local law enforcement advisors inform me that every idea I’ve had so far is “unconstitutional”. I’m willing to get creative within reason and our local law enforcement is open to new ideas that address this issue and protect public safety.
For now, please keep an eye out and be safe.
