Public works tests out the new Tiger Dam system by U.S. Flood Control July 30. The barriers will be used to protect the city’s public works facility in the event of storm flooding. The system was purchased with FEMA mitigation funds and similar flood barriers will be used for the other city buildings

“Lt. Diaz” will soon be “Chief Diaz” 😄🚔💙

Lt. Lenard Diaz, right, will serve as Bradenton Beach’s next police chief. His appointment was unanimously approved by the city commission on July 16. Diaz was nominated for the chief’s position by Mayor John Chappie. Diaz will step into the new role when current Police Chief John Cosby’s retirement takes effect on Oct. 1. Chappie said Diaz has been a law enforcement officer for 40 years and he’s served with the Bradenton Beach Police Department since 2002. Diaz has been a detective sergeant for the past 19 years. Diaz will have a probationary period of one year. Cosby, left, said the probationary period is standard for all Bradenton Beach Police Department employees. Cosby has been with Bradenton Beach Police Department for 39 years. On Oct. 1, Cosby will become the city’s permanent public works director.
