Had a great time catching up with folks at Globe Fest in Bradford today and then swung through the Fairlee Good Art Show. It’s always fun celebrating the unique things that our area has to offer, particularly when it involves community and creative expression. 🧡😍

Thank you to everyone who came out this past Saturday to help me launch my Orange County Senate Campaign! We had a full house at the Vershire Town Center community building. Special shoutouts to my sister and dad for making it, my girlfriend Ally for being there, to my campaign manager Hudson, to my friends Mel and Eric for the snacks, to all of the other friends who helped and celebrated, to Vershire for the use of their building, to everyone who came out to help kick things off. And of course, a massive thank you to all of the folks who took the mic to offer words of support, stories of interacting with me, and hopes for the future. It was particularly impactful to hear from the youngest of our group. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for older leaders mentoring me and handing me a mic repeatedly. My favorite part of public speaking is being able to share the mic time with other voices that need to be heard. I can’t wait to hit the road and to hear the many stories of the many voices of Orange County.

It was sad to watch Vermont’s recent passage of a weak data privacy bill used alongside Louisiana’s as leverage to support the federal GOP (Republican-only) SECURE Data Act proposal in today’s U.S. House Committee on Energy & Commerce hearing. We tend to think we’re exceptional and that’s dangerous. What we do or do not pass affects the what our colleagues in other states can pass and it affects what happens at a national level for all Americans - which includes Vermonters. If the Secure Act were to pass right now, it would preempt and undermine Vermont’s existing data laws such as Kids Code, our data breach laws, our Consumer Protection Act, and more. We have to do better when it comes to seeing the bigger picture, otherwise we risk harming the very people we serve. Hopefully the strong consumer advocates on the congressional committee will stand for what’s right and not let this bill pass without significant changes, if at all.

The 2026 House Session ended Friday night. Although this year felt like one of the messiest of my four, it was the one in which I personally felt the most grounded in my values of integrity and service. I started early every morning and stayed late into each night with my fellow colleagues (aka “Lounge Lizards”). I spoke with constituents, on panels, and with students. I co-chaired the tripartisan Rural Caucus as well as the bipartisan Future Caucus National AI Policy Task Force. And I participated in several other national multi-state tech policy groups. I will never forget my time on House Commerce & Economic Development Committee where I had the privilege to learn from one of the best leaders I’ve ever worked with. And I’ll never forget all of the people I’ve had the opportunity to serve with, both in Vermont as well as across the country. Hopefully, if all goes well, I will see everyone again next session in a new chamber!

I am looking forward to joining the German-American Trade and Tech Conference 2026, hosted by Aspen Institute Germany and the Vertretung des Landes Baden-Württemberg beim Bund in Berlin on June 9–10. At a time of growing geopolitical and technological competition, transatlantic dialogue on trade, technology, AI, and economic security is more important than ever. Well, since it’s passed (see previous post for No vote explanation), let’s celebrate the wins: lobbyists tried to force us to go to CT 2022 as a base, but we defended CT 2025 as a floor; lobbyists tried to gut PAI and several other definitions that we lined up in Kids Code, but we largely kept those whole; lobbyists tried to get us to reset our exemptions to entity-level and exempt nonprofits, but we largely maintained our data-level exemptions from H.208; we sacrificed the PRA, but put in intent language so that if the AG can’t enforce meaningfully, we should add it back in later; we documented more of the lobbying playbook asks and rebuttals to share with legislators across the country; we gained more global expert and local business allies; and fellow legislators made a commitment to return to this annually.

After spending the majority of my waking hours (and sometimes sleeping hours) focused on data-related consumer protection efforts in Vermont for the past 3 years, I ended up voting against what has moved forward thus far. The bill passed House 129-3.

“Madam Speaker: I voted No, not as a criticism of my colleagues, but as a criticism of what Big Tech’s lobbying does to undermine the democratic process. What happened on this bill in Vermont follows a playbook. Big Oil used it. Big To***co used it. And now Big Tech is using it. Flood the building, astroturf the business community, spread misinformation, threaten veto pressure, and wait for the Legislature to tire. Some of the same Big Tech lobbyists who pulled on strings to shape our bill are shaping the dangerously weak federal bill. Our bill will be weaponized to claim that Vermonters support weak privacy legislation as a standard. It will be used to undermine the proposed legislation of our neighboring New England states. […] To Vermonters: this is your data. These are your rights. The corporations profiting from your information have had a presence in this building that you deserve to match. Show up. Be loud. Demand better.”

Orange County Senate Candidate forms filed for the Democratic Primary on August 11th! As soon as I filed this morning, a wave of relief and excitement flooded over me. I am so in love with our Orange County Senate District towns: Bradford, Brookfield, Chelsea, Corinth, Fairlee, Randolph, Strafford, Topsham, Tunbridge, Vershire, Washington, West Fairlee, and Williamstown. I can’t wait to visit with folks this summer, to highlight our needs, and to celebrate what makes our district unique and amazing. 🧡💪💚

PS Thank you to those of you who helped chip in at the last moment to get me over the signature-gathering line. We filed with more than enough! 😘
