Alpha Company 572nd BEB "DETN8R"

Alpha Company, “DETN8R,” proudly serves as the combat engineer company of the 572nd Brigade Engineer Battalion, supporting the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Mountain) of the Vermont Army National Guard.

The roots of DETN8R trace back to the brigade’s 2010 deployment to Afghanistan, when engineer Soldiers served under the Brigade’s Special Troops Battalion during Operation Enduring Freedom. These Soldiers conducted route clearance, engineering support, and partnered with Afghan forces while supporting counterinsurgency operations across the region.

DETN8R has a high number of "legacy" Soldiers—ones whose fathers, mothers, brothers, and other family members have served. It's so deeply interwoven within the community that everyone in Bradford knows when "drill’s coming." The community involvement, along with the strong sense of pride and history, ensures that DETN8R's legacy will live on long past any generation of service members.

Today, DETN8R Soldiers specialize in mobility, counter-mobility, explosive breaching, and battlefield engineering, enabling maneuver forces to move, fight, and win. Training in the rugged terrain of the Northeast, they embody the spirit of the Mountain Brigade—tough, capable, and always ready.

DETN8R Company | CWFTX & Mountaineering Training

This past weekend, the Soldiers of DETN8R Company took to the field to execute our Annual Cold Weather FTX and Mountaineering Training Exercise. Operating in true winter conditions, our formation deliberately pushed both individual and collective limits while testing our equipment, technical proficiency, and resilience in the elements.

Throughout the exercise, Soldiers conducted:

• Over-snow mobility operations on skis – Training focused on movement techniques, terrain navigation, and maintaining tactical dispersion in snow-covered environments. Soldiers refined their ability to maneuver efficiently while in austere winter conditions.

• Fundamentals of ice climbing and vertical mobility – Personnel received instruction on rope systems, knot tying, anchor establishment, belay procedures, and safety protocols. Soldiers applied these fundamentals on ice walls, developing confidence and capability in vertical movement operations.

• Ballistic breaching operations – Teams rehearsed breaching fundamentals, safety considerations, shot placement, and coordinated entry procedures. This training enhanced our ability to rapidly and safely create access points under controlled conditions.

This FTX was intentionally designed to stress our Soldiers physically and mentally validating cold weather gear, refining technical skills, and reinforcing small-unit leadership under demanding conditions. Operating in Vermont’s winter environment requires discipline, preparation, and trust in your team. DETN8R Company demonstrated all three.

To conclude the weekend, we had the distinct honor of recognizing a Soldier for seven years of honorable and dedicated service to the unit. We also proudly conducted our first commissioning ceremony, celebrating the achievement of a cadet who earned the rank of Second Lieutenant.

It was a meaningful way to close out the weekend honoring continued service while welcoming new leadership into our ranks.

This past weekend, A Co took to the field to conduct military mountaineering operations!

Soldiers focused on building confidence and familiarity with climbing techniques, fixed ropes, and rappelling — developing the critical skills needed to operate in mountainous terrain.

It was a long day of hard work, but a great one all around.

Big shout out to our instructor who made this happen. Thank you SSG Willis!

Excellent job, team! We’ll see you all next month on the range.
