💙 What’s the Difference? Understanding Sexual Violence, Sexual Assault, and Sexual Abuse 💙

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they each have specific meanings. Understanding the differences can help us have informed conversations, support survivors, and work toward prevention.

Sexual violence is an umbrella term that includes any s*xual activity that occurs without freely given consent. This can include s*xual assault, s*xual abuse, harassment, exploitation, and other forms of harm.

Sexual assault generally refers to s*xual acts committed without consent against an adult.

Sexual abuse often refers to s*xual acts involving a minor or situations where there is an ongoing pattern of exploitation, manipulation, or power imbalance.

At the heart of all of these forms of harm is one important principle: consent must be freely given, informed, and voluntary. If someone is unable to consent due to age, impairment, coercion, or force, any s*xual act is not consensual.

By educating ourselves and others, we can help create safer communities, support survivors, and challenge the attitudes that allow s*xual violence to occur.

If you or someone you know has experienced s*xual violence, Sexual Assault Services is here to help. Our services are free, confidential, and available to survivors of all ages.

💧 National Hydration Day 💧

Today is National Hydration Day—a great reminder to take care of yourself by staying hydrated!

Drinking enough water supports your physical health, improves concentration, boosts energy, and helps your body function at its best. During the busy days of summer, it's easy to forget this simple act of self-care.

Take a moment today to refill your water bottle, encourage a friend to do the same, and prioritize your well-being. Small habits can make a big difference.

We need to start acknowledging the scope of the problem in regard to s*xual assault. Sexual violence affects people in EVERY community. Its impact goes beyond the survivors ---- hurting families, relationships, and entire communities.

Did You Know?

According to RAINN, an American is s*xually assaulted every 68 seconds.

Behind this statistic is a person—a friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or classmate whose life has been impacted by s*xual violence.

The reality of s*xual violence can feel overwhelming, but prevention, education, and support make a difference. By believing survivors, promoting healthy relationships, teaching consent, and speaking out against violence, we can help create safer communities for everyone.

Survivor. 💙

A survivor is more than a definition. It is a story of strength, resilience, and courage.

Every survivor’s journey is unique. Some are just beginning to heal. Some have been carrying their story for years. All deserve to be heard, believed, and supported.

At Sexual Assault Services, we stand alongside survivors as they reclaim their voices, rebuild their sense of safety, and move forward on their own terms. Healing is not a straight path, and no one should have to walk it alone.

Today, we honor the strength it takes to survive and the courage it takes to heal.

If you or someone you know has been affected by s*xual violence, support is available. Our services are free, confidential, and survivor-centered. 218-828-0494

💙 You are not defined by what happened to you.
💙 Your story matters.
💙 Your healing matters.

💜 What Makes You Feel Safe and Supported? 💜

Safety means something different to each of us. For some, it’s a quiet place to relax after a long day. For others, it’s a trusted friend who listens without judgment, a supportive family member, a favorite hobby, a pet, or simply knowing that someone believes them.

For survivors of s*xual violence and trauma, feeling safe and supported can be an important part of the healing journey. Safety is not only about physical protection—it’s also about emotional safety. It’s being able to express your thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism. It’s having your boundaries respected. It’s being surrounded by people who listen, believe, and support you.

Sometimes support looks like a shoulder to cry on. Sometimes it looks like encouragement during difficult moments. Other times, it may be giving yourself permission to rest, seek help, or take a break when you need one.

Everyone deserves relationships and spaces where they feel valued, respected, and heard. No one should have to carry their struggles alone.

Today, we encourage you to take a moment and reflect:
💜 What helps you feel safe?
💜 Who do you turn to when you need support?
💜 What are some healthy ways you care for yourself during difficult times?

Your answer may be different from someone else's, and that's okay. There is no one-size-fits-all path to healing, comfort, or support. What matters is finding the people, places, and practices that help you feel secure and empowered.

At Sexual Assault Services, we believe that every survivor deserves to be treated with compassion, dignity, and respect. Healing happens in spaces where people feel safe enough to be themselves and supported enough to know they don't have to face challenges alone.

If you're comfortable sharing, tell us in the comments: What makes you feel safe and supported? Your words may help someone else discover what they need on their own journey.

💜 You deserve safety. You deserve support. You deserve to be heard.

💜

🌱 Plant Your Feet and Stand Your Ground 🌱

There will be moments in life when others try to tell you who you should be, how you should feel, or how quickly you should move forward. In those moments, remember this:

Plant your feet and stand your ground.

Your voice matters. Your boundaries matter. Your experiences matter.

For survivors, standing your ground may look different every day. It might mean saying "no" without apology. It might mean asking for help. It might mean speaking your truth, or choosing not to share it until you're ready. It might mean taking one small step forward, even when the path feels uncertain.

Strength isn't always loud. Sometimes strength is simply refusing to give up on yourself.

You have the right to be heard. You have the right to feel safe. You have the right to take up space in this world.

Stand firm in your worth, because no one gets to define your value except you.

💜 You are stronger than you know, braver than you realize, and deserving of respect every single day.
