Braintree Firefighters Local 920 would like to thank FX Messina Enterprises for being a longtime supporter of public safety in the town of Braintree. Members recently had the opportunity to practice roof ventilation operations on a structure scheduled for demolition. With support like this from the community we are able to practice and improve our ability to serve the town.

Congrats to FF William “Bill” Barclay who graduated today from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Bridgewater. Bill joins the ranks along with his father, Fire Marshall Lt. William “Bill” Barclay.

Welcome to the best job in the world and good luck in your endeavors.

We stand in support of our fellow IAFF members at Quincy Firefighters Local 792, and wish them luck during this evening’s appropriation hearing.

Union leadership has fought tirelessly after being lied to about cancerous materials in firefighting turnout gear. Their battle is well documented, and we are grateful for their efforts as they continue to seek the safest gear for firefighters.

We should not be knowingly poisoned by the gear that is intended to keep us safe.

On behalf of BFD IAFF Local 920, we extend our sincere gratitude to DPW/Highway for the painstaking snow removal operation, which has facilitated safe access for emergency responders and the community at large.

Shout out to Braintree Electric Light Department for their steadfast efforts in maintaining power during extreme weather conditions, ensuring that essential services remain operational.

We also appreciate the efforts of the Water Department for their role in plowing & preserving water infrastructure integrity, including hydrant accessibility, which directly supports our firefighting capabilities.

Last (but not least 😉) thanks to Braintree Police Department and Brewster Ambulance Service for being out on the roads ensuring the call was answered for anyone in need.

Great PSA for shoveling out hydrants. Thank you Braintree Police Department!

Yesterday, Braintree Firefighters battled a two alarm fire at a home on Arnold Street. When police and fire arrived on scene, they found a family that had self evacuated and heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof.

Firefighters had to dig out the nearby hydrant in order to provide a constant supply of water to the engines fighting the fire.

Real life isn’t like the TV shows. Fire engines don’t supply an endless amount of water. Only enough for a couple of minutes.

When time is of the essence, this is why it’s important to be a good neighbor, if you have a hydrant by your house - Please clear it out after a snowstorm.

Members will gather today to pay respects for retired Deputy Dan “Bump” Ryan. Deputy Ryan was the recipient of the prestigious “firefighter of the year” award in 1986, and is survived by current member Captain Dan Ryan. We offer thoughts and prayers as the family continues to navigate these difficult times.

Local 920 is proud to support member / Firefighter Andrew Leneweaver’s effort to bring a therapy dog to area first responders. As a Navy vet with 20+ years on the job, he knows firsthand the toll stress and trauma take. Sadly, these silent threats can be just as dangerous as occupational cancer.

This sweet five week old pup will train to spot and ease PTSD symptoms, offering free support at incidents. She will bring comfort to firefighters, police, schools, and neighbors. It’s been proven to help nationwide, bringing joy without relying on costly treatment.

Join us in making this happen for those who protect us. Every bit counts!

🚒 Quick Reference for Fire Emergencies 🔥

This post will help clarify the different “alarms” fire departments utilize when responding to fire calls.

Central Station Alert - Typically, an alarm monitoring service calls to alert that an alarm has activated. Often due to a system malfunction.

Working fire - “We’re here and putting water on it.” Likely sufficient with the resources on scene.

2nd, 3rd Alarm (and so on) - “This fire is big and/or spreading” - send everyone! All apparatus are on scene, and mutual aid will be called in to assist.
