A warm front lifting through our region brings a period of humid and unsettled weather today. Expecting two rounds of rainfall, the first, a round of showers in the morning followed by a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The strength and coverage of severe weather depends on the amount of clearing this afternoon.

Braintree Emergency Management was training at the Fire Station this morning, learning to utilize the new Decontamination equipment. The BEM Fire Fighter Rehab team is based around delivering support on the fire scene with places to rest, water and misting equipment to beat the heat, portable heaters for the cold and now equipment to wash cancer causing contaminants from the fire fighters before they bring those back to the fire trucks and stations. BEM looks forward to bringing these new support capabilities to the forefront of the work we do.

The threat of severe weather in the northeastern U.S. today is a good reminder to think about how to stay safe while attending outdoor events when storms threaten.

Don’t let lightning catch you off guard.

⚡Follow the 30-minute rule: wait at least half an hour after you see lightning or hear thunder before heading back outside.

Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Heads up for Sat evening: Isolated to scattered strong to severe storms are possible across the region, primarily between 6 PM and 10 PM. A Level 2 "Slight Risk" is in place for portions of interior southern New England, while a Level 1 "Marginal Risk" covers the coast. The main threats are damaging winds and frequent lightning. Stay weather-aware and keep an eye on the radar if you have outdoor plans!

⛈️ Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Saturday evening into early Sunday across portions of southern New England.

Greatest risk currently appears to be west of I-495, including central/western MA, CT, and NW RI. Main hazards include damaging wind gusts, lightning, and heavy downpours.

🕕 Highest concern: 6 PM–Midnight Saturday (some storms may linger overnight). Stay weather aware.

Please be advised that there is a water main break. Water service will be temporarily shut off for approximately 4–6 hours beginning around 4:00 PM today for residents on St. Claire Street (from Forest Street to St. Lawrence Street). Approximately 16 homes will be affected.

Today marks the start of Atlantic Hurricane Season, which runs through Nov. 30. MEMA strongly recommends that residents, visitors, and businesses prepare early in order to avoid being caught off-guard by a tropical system.

Today’s storm created a number of issues across our system, and our crews are still actively working to address some of them.
