The Title I, Part 3: Education of MIgrant Students department attended the virtual National Association of State
Directors of Migrant Education 2026 Convocation this week. Between sessions, the team stuffed over 300 backpacks for qualifying students. It is the team's hope that families use the backpacks for summer growth and for preparation for the upcoming school year. Each backpack contained books for summer reading, grade level workbooks for math and literacy review, and school utensils. Practicing cognitive skills during summer break is essential to prevent the "summer slide", which is when students can lose up to two or three months of academic progress in math and reading over summer break. Each family also received bags that contained various board games that can be used to build children's cognitive functions, social-emotional resilience, and communication skills over the summer.
