Being a firefighter means fighting fires. And sometimes this means entering burning buildings to protect lives and property. To do this safely and effectively, we have to gain knowledge, experience and confidence with live fires. This past weekend, members of the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Dept. joined several other departments from around the region for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) hands-on flashover training. Our training started in the classroom but we spent most of our time in "The Can" observing fire behavior.

This past Saturday, the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Dept. joined Penn Yan Fire Department and City of Geneva, NY: Fire Department for continued ice rescue training. Ice changes throughout the winter and into the spring, so it's important to train and gain experience with those changing conditions. Thank you to Penn Yan for organizing the training.

On Tuesday, the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Department was back on the WXXI Connections radio show. Asst. Chief Bill DiFabio, EMS Captain Matt Kelly, and firefighters Alvin Leid, Lily Stewart and Rebecca Case sat down with Evan Dawson for a conversation about what it's like to be a new member. We talked at length about Alvin, Lily and Rebecca's growth as first responders, and the importance of volunteer first responders to their local communities. Many thanks to Evan, Megan Mack and their entire team for a great show! To listen to or watch the show, click on the link below.

This past weekend, we completed our swiftwater rescue training. Swimming out to a victim is a last resort, after talking, reaching, throwing something and rowing to a victim are not possible. Getting in moving water and going to a victim puts rescuers in a dangerous situation. However, when it's necessary, we do it with the proper techniques and tools. One of our last activities during the class was practicing how to safely intercept a victim caught in a current. This past weekend, the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Dept. was joined by members from Bellona Volunteer Fire Company, Benton Volunteer Fire Department , Dundee Fire Dept and Potter Fire Department for the first part of our swiftwater rescue training. After classroom instruction and a swim test, we spent a cold day in the Keuka Lake Outlet practicing basic rescue skills and using different tools. The skills and tools needed for moving water are different in many ways from those used in still water (like a lake). Swiftwater rescues can occur in flooded urban environments as well as rivers and outlets.

This week the Branchport Keuka Park Fire Dept. continued to train on essential firefighting skills. There are many locations in our district without fire hydrants -- so we need to bring water to the scene. We accomplish this with multiple tanker runs and a portable pond. Our firefighting apparatus can then draft from the pond and put water on the fire.

Earlier this month, the Branchport Keuka Park dive team travelled to Bethlehem, PA for a weekend of training at Lake Hydra -- a former quarry that has since naturally filled with water. There are multiple vehicles and old infrastructure in the lake for divers to work around. The team practiced communication, navigation, operating in limited visibility conditions, and entering submerged vehicles -- including an old jet. Many thanks to Lake Hydra Scuba for opening the facility to our team free of charge and providing any assistance they might need.
