It is with deep sadness that the Sandyston Township Fire Department announce the passing of Ex Chief Alan “AD” Delea.

For 52 years, AD was more than just a member of our fire department, he was family. Whether responding to calls, sharing stories around the firehouse, or mentoring younger members, AD left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Serving as chief from 1983 to 2008, he lead the department through many years of growth and change with dedication and wisdom. AD was also very involved in the planning, preparation and construction of our current firehouse, helping turn a vision for the future into a reality. That firehouse continues to serve or department and community today. Beyond the title of Chief, AD will be remembered for his friendship, sense of humor, and the genuine care he had for his community.

Please join us in honoring and remembering AD for his extraordinary service, leadership, and friendship. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Chief.

This past week, station 38 bid farewell to 38 Tanker 2. Tanker 2 is a 1992 Ford that was purchased used from Frankford Fire Dept as a an additional water supply unit and to back up Tanker 1 when the need arises. Approximately two years ago, members began the conversation of a replacement apparatus and formed a committee to explore replacing two aging apparatus with one new one. As we continue to work towards that vision to get a new truck purchased we are looking at build times of beyond two years.

Members were made aware of a possible newer tanker that would become available and were lucky enough to get this apparatus donated by the township of Mahwah. The “new to us” Tanker 2 was delivered last weekend and members immediately began cleaning it up to make it ours and work towards getting it into service. The “new” tanker 2 is a 2004 Seagrave that carries 2500 gallons of water which will be a great asset to the township with limited water sources available. We look forward to having tanker 2 in service in the coming weeks!

We can’t thank the Mayor and Committee of Mahwah Twp. enough for this donation!

At approximately 3:45 this morning, Station 38 Fire was alerted into Walpack Twp. For the reported RV camper fire. As 38 Engine 2 went into service, Sussex County Sheriffs 911 Center updated that conflicting reports had been received for the camper or possibly a residential house was well involved in fire. The upgrade in call nature to possible structure fire added 25 (Frankford) Engine and Tanker as well as 33 (Milford) Engine 2 for the RIC on the first alarm assignment. Chief 38-1 added an additional Engine and Tanker from Montague due to conflicting reports and distance to the scene.

Units arrived to find a fully involved Camper fire approximately 30 feet from the residence as well as multiple vehicles and the 250 gallon propane tank that was attached to the camper starting to ignite. Crews stretched an initial hand line and knocked the bulk of the fire down in minutes. 38-1 updated dispatch to have 25 fire units continue with 35 units redirected to station coverage and cancelling 33 Engine 2.

Units operating on scene:
38-1, 38-7, 38 Engine 2, 38 Tanker
25-2, 25 Engine, 25 Tanker, NJSP, Atlantic EMS, Sussex County Fire Marshals Office

Station Coverage: 35 Engine, 35 Tanker

33 Engine 2 cancelled enroute.
