The golden years were celebrated Saturday in Brandon.

Carter High School graduates say they don't want people to forget about the history of their school and they want to show that history to their grandkids.

Rankin County buses open their doors to all children, but that wasn't always the case.

Carter High School started in 1952 during the integration period. Minority students were brought here to receive their education. Today, they are reclaiming that legacy. Many people came together for the 50th reunion and remember where their education started.

"We had no black schools in Rankin County for us to go to and get a high school education. We either had to go somewhere else or to Jackson or some other place to finish high school. So many parents did that, that could afford it, but others could not," said Wilson Taylor, Carter High School graduate.

"It makes me feel good that they have an equal chance with anybody else to gain the education they deserve, to get and the best education they deserve to get. As opposed to when we were in school here. We were very proud of the school. Even though it was supposed to be equal, it was not equal," Taylor added.

Right now members of the alum are working to get a historical marker to put next to the school.

A reclaiming ceremony and celebration were held at the Old Carter High School Saturday.

Carter High School was established in 1951 for black students in Brandon.

It’s now the county’s alternative school.

Those who went to the school say Carter became the center of black Rankin County life until 1970.

After schools were desegregated, the facility that housed Carter became Brandon Middle School.

Carter High School was stripped of its name, and trophies, awards, and significant memorabilia were burned.

“We actually don’t have anything that was left from that era except maybe one clipping that was in the library. So as far as the momentos, the certificates, the photos, trophies, any of those things, we don’t have anymore. So, this is the process were going through to reclaim that legacy,” said Charles Thompson.

The class of 1966 also wants to have a historical marker placed at the site.
