We want to thank Chaplain Burt Reynolds of the Brandon American Legion Post 55 for his opening prayer, 911 remarks on the 20th anniversary, and closing prayer. We also want to thank members of the Brandon Fire Department, Brandon Area Rescue Squad, Brandon Police Department, Brandon American Legion, and most of all community members who came to attend the ceremony. It was nice to see many of the faces who were in attendance 6 years ago when we marked our first gathering.

Thank you for sharing your stories. We are lucky to have a monument that can be shared with everyone, and a community that remembers the sacrifices of so many.

The story of the World Trade Center steel beam in Brandon VT

After the September 11th tragedy of 2001 in which the Twin Towers in New York City were targeted, Americans grieved the senseless loss of life, in addition to those lives lost in the attack on the Pentagon and Flight 93. The coordinated attack on America was a loss many of us today remember as an extreme time of sadness, but also a time where we saw all Americans come together like never before.

Some 9 years later, on September 27, 2010 after lengthy research and communication, I signed a contract with the Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to obtain a steel beam identified as I-93 in the Port Authority’s World Trade Center Archive. The beam was turned over to the Brandon Police Department on behalf of the Town of Brandon. Here the steel beam was stored while Town officials and community members discussed the proper site for the beam. Several spots were looked at but none decided upon. The center of town was the most sought-after location, however the uncertainty of the Route 7 project was still an unknown as to what the center of town would look like.

Finally, after storing the steel beam for several years, we decided it was time to find a home to remember those fellow Americans who were lost on that tragic day. We began in August of 2015 with the digging and construction. The Brandon Public Works Director along with Brandon Highway Department members began the excavation of the final resting spot outside of the Brandon Police Department. Resident/Volunteer Raymond Jobst assisted in much of the work and fabricated the steel stand our steel beam rests on. He also designed the memorial site. After a few weeks of construction, the steel beam was finally placed and our first 911 Memorial Service was held at Brandon PD and attended by members of the community, Town officials, members of the Brandon Fire Department and members of the Brandon Area Rescue Squad.

As we approach the 20th anniversary of this tragic day in America, let us not forget those lives lost, and the lives of the brave service men and women who have since continued to fight for our freedom as a result of these attacks. Please join us on September 11, 2021 at 9:00AM for a short memorial service led by Brandon’s American Legion Post. All are welcome.

As you remember those lives lost, and those who continue to fight for our freedoms, please also remember that feeling of what it was like to be an American and how we all stood together.

Brandon Armed Robbery:

On 08/22/2021 at approximately 8:50 a.m. a male subject wearing a mask walked into the Union Street Grocery on Union Street in Brandon, brandished a knife, and demanded money from the cash register. The store owner gave the suspect the money at which time he left the store. Once outside the suspect was chased by a customer who had just left the store and chased the suspect to the area of Rossiter Street and Church Street. The suspect jumped into the vehicle that was being driven by a female, and they fled the area. The vehicle was a gray Pontiac Vibe, Vermont registration HHA705.
Police have had several leads in the case. Police are asking anyone who believes they have information about this case or similar robberies, to call Brandon Police at 247-0222.

Brandon PD looking for help in identifying vandals

Last weekend Brandon PD received reports of properties that were hit by paintballs. These were clearly random shots at homes, buildings, barns, garbage cans, and street signs. Some folks on Facebook released images of a potential car involved. Today we received two more reports of paintball strikes. One to a vehicle and another home. The areas of these reports came from Florence Road, High Pond Road, Union Street and Carver Street.

Brandon PD asks folks to share information with us if you have any information on the vandalism or vehicle involved, and to report to us instances of vandalism to property.

Thank you

Brandon Police Department is sharing an important post about the increase in Covid-19 cases in Rutland County. Please see the information below provided by the Department of Health

Rutland County Town Health Officers,

The Health Department has detected an increase in COVID-19 activity in Rutland County during the last two weeks. What we know is:

Rutland City and some surrounding towns now have evidence of increased rates, multiple household clusters and workplaces with cases.

Surrounding towns with increased rates include Benson, Pittsford, Castleton, West Haven and Fair Haven.

At this time we are seeing an increased number of cases that are not known to be associated with an outbreak, which is an indication of more widespread community transmission.

We are sharing this information to encourage community-wide public health interventions. We are asking for your partnership and recommend taking the following steps to slow the spread of infections:

1. Increase messaging about COVID-19 prevention across platforms such as Front Porch Forum, the town websites, local newspapers, and social media. Include the following talking points in your messages:

· Our town is seeing an increase in COVID-19 activity.

· Take these prevention steps to help slow the spread:

o Stay home if you are sick.

o Wash your hands often.

o Keep your social circle to only the people you live with.

o Stay at least 6 feet apart from people you do not live with.

o Wear a mask any time you are around people you do not live with.

· We are monitoring the map of recent cases by town on the Health Department’s website to know when spread begins to slow down in our area.

· If you have gathered with people you don’t live with, you should quarantine, and we encourage you to get tested right away, and then again 7 days after the gathering.

· If you had close contact with someone with COVID-19, follow quarantine guidelines. Answer the phone if a contact tracer from the Health Department calls you.

· Avoid non-essential travel. If you travel out of Vermont, you must quarantine when you return.

· Remember that we’re all at risk of getting this virus. Offer to help community members who are affected by isolation and quarantine. We thank you for being understanding and supportive of one another during this time.

· Find more information at healthvermont.gov/COVID-19.

2. Regularly share information about where to get tested. Find testing opportunities in your area on the COVID-19 testing web page.
https://www.healthvermont.gov/covid-19/testing/where-get-tested

3. Refer to the map of recent cases by town to monitor the spread in your town. Read the Frequently Asked Questions above the map to learn more about what the map shows. Transmission is decreasing in your town when the color gets lighter. Transmission is increasing when the color gets darker. The map is updated every Friday. https://www.healthvermont.gov/covid-19-communities

4. Check out additional resources at healthvermont.gov/COVID-19 to stay informed on the latest guidance and information.

BRANDON PD REMINDS EVERYONE OF THE WINTER PARKING BAN

We are reminding everyone that the winter parking ban is in effect from November 1st through April 1st. All roadways have to be free of parked cars from 12:01Am to 6:00 AM. This allows our highway department to clean up roads overnight and have all parking areas cleaned out.

Landlords of apartments cannot authorize you to park overnight during these times on the road. For folks living downtown who have difficulty finding parking, there is available parking in the municipal lot where the Mobil station used to be, as well as the parking lot behind Cafe Provence. Both of these lots are also plowed so vehicles parked in these lots should be moved as soon as possible in the morning.

Vehicles parked in violation are subject to being ticketed and towed at the owner's expense.

Thank you to all for making our road crew's job easier !

Brandon Police Make Arrests in Burglary Cases

November was a busy month for police in Brandon. On November 13, 2020 Brandon Police responded to reports of two burglaries into Fisher Electric and Virgil & Constance Garden Center, both located on Franklin Street. Both businesses were victims of forced entry. While investigating the burglaries police discovered a vehicle that had been stolen from a residence on McConnell Road. The owner was not aware the vehicle had been stolen. In the process of the vehicle being used it was intentionally damaged as well.

On November 23, 2020 Brandon Police also responded to a report of a residential burglary on N. Birch Hill Road. The residence was forcibly entered and damage occurred as well as property taken. While investigating these burglaries police also worked with Vermont State Police who were investigating two recent burglaries in Pittsford.

On December 2, 2020 Brandon Police interviewed 2 suspects and as a result of those interviews two local residents were charged. Police charged Irving Rose III, 40 of Brandon with Accessory After the Fact. Also arrested was Cassandra Chasse, 29 of Brandon. Chasse will be facing charges of 3 counts of Burglary, Attempted Burglary, 3 counts of Unlawful Mischief, and Aggravated Operation Without Owners Consent. Other charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Both individuals were cited and will appear in Rutland Superior Court, Criminal Division on December 7, 2020. No further information is available at this time.
